So the GOP has been trumpeting an immigration “compromise” this weekend, right? They’re telling us it’s DACA plus TPS (Temporary Protected Status — available to people whose countries have suffered significant disasters, currently applies to hundreds of thousands of people in the US who have been here for over 15 years) for the wall, fair trade, clean swap and all that? Yeah, about that. They’re lying their butts off about what’s in the bill. This isn’t a compromise, it’s a Stephen Miller fever dream. Their bill absolutely guts the TPS and asylum systems. This isn’t DACA plus TPS for the wall. It’s temporary DACA with a fixed end date, plus gutting TPS, gutting asylum forever, and building the wall.
The legislative text of their bill has just been posted, and starting on page 1278, it contains a set of horrifically extreme anti-asylum measures that would gut the ability of desperate people around the world to seek protection in the United States.
Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, policy analyst at the American Immigration Council, has made a thorough list of the atrocities. See also the analysis of Todd Schulte (who notes that anti-immigration extremist Mark Krikorian loves these details). Per Reichlin-Melnick:
Now that the bill text is out, Democrats should see almost immediately that the President's claimed "compromise" is a complete joke. This bill would be one of the single-biggest dismantling of America's systems of humanitarian protections ever. It's Stephen Miller's dream bill.
Among the many, many restrictive changes are requiring Central American minors to apply for asylum from their home countries — this is a death sentence. It also drastically limits the already inadequate judicial review of asylum applications.
And that’s not the worst of it. Philip Wolgin and some other policy types observe that the bill would essentially eliminate TPS, by ensuring that almost no one is eligible. Per Royce Murray:
This would eliminate TPS eligibility for nearly all who currently have it, for example, based on lack of lawful presence. It would render TPS a bit remedy available to a select few who likely don’t need it bc they have another lawful status.
Dear media: please take notice, you are being PLAYED. This is an extreme bill, whose goal is, and whose effect would unquestionably be, to systematically reduce the future non-white population of the United States. Treat it accordingly.
