Serving Trump, not America
Trump said a lot of crazy things and told a lot of lies in his latest phone call to Fox and Friends, but one thing in particular caught my attention:
Trump then complimented Barr, who oversaw the completion of the Muller probe, positing that “we may have ended this thing a lot sooner had he been there originally.”
Although he didn’t come right out and say it (just like he didn’t say “I’m now bribing you” to Zelensky), that comment seems to strongly suggest that it was Trump’s fixer the Attorney General, not Mueller, who made the decision to end the Mueller investigation. If it was Barr’s decision, it means that the investigation was ended prematurely. Which means that, instead of doing his job and trying to get to the bottom of it, Barr was making sure any uncomfortable truth remained hidden.
If that’s the case, it’s a big deal. It means that, although Mueller didn’t find sufficient evidence to obtain a conviction on a charge of conspiracy, he was forced to shut down the investigation before he had a chance to look at all the evidence.
The timing of the investigation’s conclusion was always suspicious. It happened shortly after Barr was sworn in. We’re supposed to believe that this was just a coincidence, but Trump’s comment indicates otherwise.
“No collusion! No obstruction!” was always bullshit. The report did, in fact, show collusion, and it certainly showed obstruction. What it didn’t show was conspiracy. Perhaps that’s only because it wasn’t allowed to.
