Senate Republicans are panicking big time as their moment of truth approaches and they have to choose between Donald Trump and the U.S. Constitution. Politico reports that Republicans are trying to cover their you know whats, with a transparent piece of legislation that once again proves they’ve chosen Trump.
With roughly a dozen Senate Republicans either committed to voting to disapprove of the president or weighing their options, some in the GOP are trying to cut a deal with the president to scale back his national emergency power so that Congress must approve future emergencies. Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) introduced legislation Tuesday that would end national emergencies after 30 days unless Congress votes in favor of it.
The legislation would give Republicans cover and allow Trump to violate the Constitution just this one time, in hopes of limiting Republican defections before Thursday’s vote to terminate Trump’s fake national emergency.
"Do you hear me, my colleagues, my Republican colleagues? This won't pass," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Wednesday morning. "This fig leaf is so easily seen through, so easily blown aside that it leaves the constitutional pretensions of my Republican colleagues naked."
Over in the House, Speaker Nancy Pelosi is having none of this obvious desperation coming from Senate Republicans, so the legislation is dead on arrival. The Speaker summed up the piece of legislation perfectly in a tweet that slams the door on Senate Republicans.
Thank you, Madam Speaker!
The next time Republicans describe themselves as constitutional conservatives, this serves as a reminder that allowing Trump an out ‘just this once’ is far from defending the Constitution. Instead, it’s just Republicans swearing fealty to Trump over this country, yet again.
