Fair warning. Even though this is just the initial reaction to the poll this will be a bit of a long diary. I make my apologies and understand completely that you have already gone to the Top Pictures. Really. I don’t mind. I hope you come back …
OK, so now that you have looked at the pictures let’s talk about the project. We wanted to put something into the community that would allow us to let our collective voices to be heard. Maybe it’s a first edit of the terms of cooperation over the primary season. Maybe it will just be so much digital code that we no longer use, like the appendix.
Also, I think something happened to brillig’s garden. I hope that nothing too awful occurred.
And pie!

10 hours in
“climate change” and “healthcare” dominated the first round of the poll. “climate change” led by a 2 to 1 margin. Apparently, the environment is the number one plank in the kossack platform. And it makes sense, there is no Planet B. And expanding healthcare seems to be the next thing we should move onto. But again, this is just the first reading of the data.
The one thing that pretty much unites the entire community:
from marking time:
- prosecution of the last administration — it runs the risk of becoming political retaliation, but we need to identify, prosecute, convict and punish everyone involved in tampering with the 2016 election, covering it up or obstructing any of the investigations — including senators, representatives, cabinet members, DOJ and FBI personnel. I’m at the point that I think the entire GOP is a racketeer influenced corrupt organization (RICO) and needs to be treated as such. Power and Privilege cannot Prevent Prosecution.
Moving into Sunday
The “climate change” option is clearly the winner of this poll. It spent Saturday afternoon expanding its lead. The “healthcare” option remained a very consistent #2. Clearly these two issues are the things kossacks care about and prioritize.
Why the last three options?
I very consciously included two options: “patriarchy” and “White supremacy”. And kossacks didn’t disappoint. These interrelated issues will be addressed more in depth next Saturday. I will leave it at that for now.
What next?
I will consult and track the poll until Wednesday to see what develops. Expect the long form analysis next Saturday on Top Comments.
edit: diaries may be recommended in perpetuity, but commenting within the diary ends after 7 days. That’s a hard limit, you can’t even reply to a comment made one minute before if the 7 day period expires.
The “pie” option
It seems we are at a point in the expansion of the community where pie is no longer universally understood. I would like to address that tonight.
What is pie?
Pie is a Daily Kos slang term that acts as somewhat of a catch all. Think fuhgeddabowdit. Or widget. Or thingamabob. The usage is pretty fluid. To throw pie is to re enact the ad mentioned below, which involved two women and a pie fight. After a time, tensions softened but the pie remained. So many polls were taken with pie as an option that it became a snarky thing to add it to every poll.
How did this start?
Who really knows. Basically an ad appeared for a while for a reality television show. It was a fairly awful ad. Without going into detail, kos actually referred to the “women’s studies set” in a front page diary. To say that emotions were heightened is to grossly understate the discussions. It was #metoo long before #metoo.
The use of pie
This is just a best guess as for proper usage. It is snark. It is whimsical. It is pure Daily Kos. It’s one of those things that defines our community. For me personally, the use of pie in a poll means one of two things. The first is to indicate it is a silly poll and I invite you to be a non conformist. The second is to give an option that says I Voted None of the Above and Here’s Why.
I hope that you enjoyed this little walk down memory lane.
So, here’s something interesting ...
I went to an interfaith service this afternoon to build community. There were many speakers, including an atheist (!), who all spoke about community and peace and compassion. But one man stood out head and shoulders. He spoke towards the end of the line which is a good thing because I would not have followed him.
Anyway, he is Muslim. I don’t know what position he holds other than that he was selected to speak today. He is a Black man who read the Qur’an and eventually converted. But child, that man caught the Holy Ghost. He raised the rafters.
And he challenged us to visit churches, especially places that we don’t feel comfortable, of other faiths. So I asked him where he prays and he invited me to Jummah next Friday. So that’s going to be … cool (?). I am very looking forward to this week. I mean. I did live on a seminary campus for a year. I didn’t get all that experience for nothing!
Oh. And I got home and was invited to Pentecostal church on Sunday. So that’s happening too.
For those who don’t know me. For me to see one sanctuary in 8 months is pretty standard. To see 3 sanctuaries in 8 days is akin to a road to Damascus experience. I’m not about to enter seminary. Liz’s experience taught me that much. And I’m not worried about a swift conversion. But I am hyper aware of the spiritual today.
Wa salaam aleikum
I wish you peace
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
