Around the same time that a building at the Highlander Education and Research Center in New Market, Tennessee—an 80-year-old civil rights institution—was burning down, hate-filled graffiti was being painted on buildings in Oklahoma. Specifically, a slew of Nazi-inspired swastikas, anti-Semitic phrases, and anti-LGBTQ and racist graffiti was left in front of and on offices of the Oklahoma Democratic Party and the Chickasaw Nation in Oklahoma City.
On March 29, Oklahoma City police released a grainy security-camera image to the public of a potential suspect. On Wednesday, the Cleveland County Democratic Party headquarters, the Firehouse Art Center, and McKinley Elementary School, all in the Oklahoma city of Norman, were vandalized with similar graffiti, and law enforcement said they believed the incidents in the two cities were related.
On Thursday, Norman police announced that they had arrested a suspect, Allison Christine Johnson. The 45-year-old was taken into custody and booked on making “terrorist threats.” According to the Oklahoman, Johnson is a registered Republican.
