By several accounts, it looks as if Trump's four-minute tantrum meeting yesterday with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer was staged. That is, his so-called "spontaneous" blow up was not a reaction to anything Nancy Pelosi said, but a highly orchestrated, preordained stunt.
This type of stunt is not new for Trump, of course. Back in November of 2018, Pelosi and Schumer agreed to meet with Trump for talks in which both parties agreed to be strictly private. Trump, if you may remember, went back on his word. He proceeded to grandstand and make public disparaging comments as the meeting was about to take place. When Pelosi and Schumer decided to forgo the meeting because of Trump's duplicity, Trump staged a faux meeting with two empty chairs with signs of Chuck and Nancy on them.
The upshot of all these Trump antics is that Democratic lawmakers have a sound, plausible reason for refusing to meet Trump. The man simply is completely devoid of a concept called honor and cannot be trusted. His "word", simply put, has no meaning.
For any type of productive talks to take place, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer have every reason to demand that these talks take place on congressional turf. They can justifiably say "Yes, Mr. President, we'd love to discuss issues with you, but every time we agree to do so, you put on a childish, unprofessional display of grandiosity meant to disparage us. You have to come to us this time."
It may seem like a small thing, but in my view, Trump's political power has been significantly undermined by his political stunts. The physical location of where political negotiations take place is not a trivial matter. One must cede power when traveling to an adversary's turf to conduct business. As of now, it looks as if Mr. Trump will have to do exactly that if he wants to meet with his political colleagues in the Democratic Party.
