Donald Trump and top administration officials are denying the horrifying conditions in the Clint, Texas, Border Patrol station reported by The New York Times and The El Paso Times—the same conditions that have been so well documented at multiple border facilities by lawyers, doctors, members of Congress, and the administration’s own internal watchdog. The descriptions of filth, hunger, and disease are a “hoax,” said Trump, and also “phony and exaggerated.”
“What I can tell you right now is that there’s adequate food, water,” claimed Kevin McAleenan, the acting Homeland Security secretary. “For over a year, there’s been showers there.” And yet still there are multiple reports of migrants not being allowed to shower, an issue that the sheer physical existence of shower facilities doesn’t answer.
Ken Cuccinelli, the acting director of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, blamed congressional Democrats for not funneling more money more quickly to the abusive detention camps. Because when the Trump administration makes a set of policy decisions to detain more people for longer periods of time, Democrats should definitely jump to fund that without imposing any oversight requirements.
Lie, deflect, and attack is all these people know. And that’s what they’re going to keep doing while they run detention centers keeping children and adults alike in unsafe and unsanitary conditions, creating misery for its own sake and dehumanizing migrants fleeing violence and poverty so that Trump can get his base all excited.
