Gizmodo: Farmers and Ranchers Just Came Together to Support the Green New Deal
A national coalition of some 10,000 farmers and ranchers have come together to support a Green New Deal. Some members came together outside the Capitol on Wednesday to announce the launch of Farmers and Ranchers for a Green New Deal. The group will lobby Congress, educate consumers, and work with communities to ensure that the transition away from fossil fuels and toward a green economy covers their food and nutritional needs.
This represents a major step in building rural support for the Green New Deal. The GOP likes to paint the Green New Deal as liberal lunacy, but if more people in the Midwest or more traditionally Republican states can get on board, well, the GOP may finally STFU. Moreover, the agriculture sector make up 9 percent of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions so it will have to be part of any climate solution.
“Now is the time for solutions, not supporting the status quo,” Sherri Dugger, coalition co-chair and Indiana-based farmer, said during the announcement. “I care about the climate. I care about food security. I care about the world and what we’re leaving behind for our children.”
I'm going to let this story speak for itself while I chortle quietly in the corner.
Of course, it's too soon for polling on this. And there is too much here to unpack in a single Diary. There will, of course, be other Fridays.
Well, I am going to point out that this story is not in the MSM. HuffPo is as close as we have come so far. Discuss.

The Hill: Coalition of farmers and ranchers endorses Green New Deal
1 day ago - A national coalition representing thousands of farmers and ranchers endorsed the Green New Deal on Wednesday.
Will Harris, co-chairman of the coalition and owner of a cattle farm, said at Wednesday’s press conference that a study done by research firm Quantis found that his farm sequestered 3.5 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent for every pound of beef he produced.
“The way we raise cattle is actually part of a solution to climate change. We are mitigating greenhouse gases,” Harris said.
The Real News: 10,000 Farmers and Ranchers Call on Congress to Pass ...

The Farmers & Ranchers for a Green New Deal coalition was formed for the purpose of ensuring that farmers and ranchers—not just corporate agribusiness lobbyists—have a voice in future agriculture-related policy reforms.

In a letter sent to Congress on Wednesday morning, the newly formed bipartisan coalition U.S. Farmers & Ranchers for a Green New Deal threw its weight behind the sweeping industrial plan outlined in a resolution that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) proposed in February.
But zeroing out the country’s planet-heating emissions by mid-century requires a transformation in agriculture as dramatic as shifting the energy sector away from fossil fuels, the letter says.
In the face of worsening climate chaos and massive economic inequities wreaking havoc on the nation, a broad coalition of social justice and environmental organizations and visionary politicians like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are building momentum for a Green New Deal. All elected leaders who care about our shared future should support this urgently needed vision for a just transition toward economic and environmental justice.
OK, there is lots more in this vein, but that will do for now.

The AARP Weighs in on Cannabis
The AARP is by far the largest organization representing older people in the United States. It boasts 38 million members and produces the two biggest circulation publications in the country. It is an organization that is widely known and well-respected in the retirement community and beyond.
So when AARP published a complete guide to medical marijuana and other aspects of cannabis for their members, many took notice.
The guide itself is multiple pages covering FAQs, CBD, where research stands and recreational marijuana. On the first page they cover some of the “basics,” like whether or not you can count on your doctor for help in navigating the cannabis world, how much more potent some marijuana is today compared to the days of yore and why older people still hide their medical marijuana use due to the continuing stigma that surrounds the issue.
As for their stance on medical marijuana, AARP was clear on that as well. “In March, the AARP Board of Directors approved a policy supporting the medical use of marijuana for older adults in states that have legalized it."
What could that do to politics in FL and AZ? Asking for numerous friends.
