The campaign to eject Donald Trump from the White House and replace him with Joe Biden dropped an ad beautifully targeted at Black voters Saturday. “Mayors” features duly elected city leaders from across the country, and has one simple message: Vote.
The ad was released on a day where Candace Owens and Trump hosted multiple superspreader events, including one that definitely was the latter’s latest Hatch Act violation. The day’s three events were designed to reassure not just Black Americans, but also moderate white suburban voters, that Trump and his policies aren’t saturated with racism and anti-Blackness. The events were also crafted to imply that COVID-19-infected failure of a president has something resembling widespread Black support.
The data indicate otherwise, of course. And “Mayors” is a potent dose of that reality.
Pew Research estimates that just 6% of Black voters fell for Trump’s orange-tinged nonsense in 2016. That’s right: Black people came out for Hillary Clinton at higher rates than any other race. Sadly Trump’s support included 14% of Black men, while Black women came out almost uniformly (98%) for Clinton.
According to Pew, Trump—despite all his bluster about being the best president for Black people since Lincoln—has managed to make just a teensy gain (2%) in Black support. Hence Saturday’s Black People Triple Superspreader, and last month’s “Platinum Plan” for Black people party in Atlanta. Which brings us back to “Mayors.” Despite Trump’s traipsing in Atlanta with empty promises, and despite Owens’ “anti-Black Lives Matter” march on Washington D.C.’s Black Lives Matter Plaza on Saturday, there are politicians out there who enjoy the support of Black voters. Many of them are mayors. A whole bunch of ‘em are Black.
And they came with the facts. Watch “Mayors” below, and be sure to share with your friends and networks. Someone you know may just need to see it. Be sure to wait for the unexpected twist.
