The 44th President joins a list of notable Democrats who have backed the challenger to Cindy Hyde-Smith in the Mississippi Senate Race.
With less than two weeks before election day, Democratic challenger Mike Espy received yet another important boost to his campaign when former President Barack Obama announced his endorsement for the former congressman and Agriculture Secretary. President Obama joins Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass), the Congressional Black Caucus PAC, and Joe Biden in backing Espy.
Espy is hoping to become the first black person to represent the state of Mississippi as a Senator in more than a century. Despite the
Cook Political Report
rating the Senate race as ‘Solid Republican,' the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee have provided field and organization assistance in an effort to make the race more competitive and force the GOP to spend more money on what is consistently a red state.
In order to win, Espy will require a large voter turnout among white suburban voters as well as a strong turnout among Black voters. Mississippi has the largest share of Black voters than any other state in the country at 37 percent.
Current polling
shows that Espy trails Hyde-Smith by just one point after trailing by as many as 25 points a few months ago.
