The Republican Party seems hell-bent on bringing back 1940s fascism dressed up in antebellum Southern clothing. The Washington Post reports that Republican Rep. Price Wallace (MS-77) wrote on Twitter: “We need to succeed [sic] from the union and form our own country.” I couldn’t tell you what that means. I’m guessing that Wallace would like Mississippi to secede from the United States of America.
The Washington Post reports that the tweet has since been deleted, but was posted around the time on Saturday when Joe Biden was announced as president-elect. The fact that Mississippi waited until the middle of this year to finally replace the Confederate symbol on their state flag makes this very unintelligent and poorly written comment coming from one of that state’s conservative representatives less than shocking.
I wonder what the more than 25% of Mississippians who depend on Medicare and Medicaid would think about that. I also wonder where they think they might come up with the loss of around $4.8 billion in defense contracts and payroll that they receive. Well, it’s hard to know, but I’m sure these super duper patriots have thought this out.
Wallace was replying to a Twitter thread by former Mississippi state Rep. Robert Foster. Foster, if you don’t remember, was the asshat who would not allow Mississippi Today reporter Larrison Campbell on a 15-hour ride-along unless she brought a male colleague with her. Foster was running last year, and losing, in a bid to become the next governor of Mississippi. Guess they dodged that bullet?
Anyway, Wallace seems to have been replying to Foster’s tweet that said: “Not sure who all needs to hear this but we are not a Democracy. We are a Constitutional Republic. The majority does not rule, the law derived from a Constitution has the final say. Democrats and their Fake News Cheerleaders are about to get a hard lesson in civics.” The important takeaway here is that the Republican Party’s new position, based on the super white supremacist rationalization of what was once just a wing of their party, is that “we are not a Democracy,” and “The majority does not rule.”
Remember that.
