When Georgians Vote, Republicans Aren't Happy

Ever since Joe Biden took the lead in Georgia, Georgia’s two Republican U.S. Senate candidates, Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue have been calling for Georgia’s Secretary of State to resign. In press statements, they cited “
failures
,” “mismanagement,” and a “lack of transparency” in the state’s vote counting process. The only problem, they have absolutely no evidence to support their claims. And according to Georgia’s Secretary of State, and other Georgia elected officials in the Republican Party, their claims are “
laughable
.” The Georgia Secretary of State released regular updates from his press office throughout the election, and there was magically not even a single complaint about his process until Democrats started performing well in the state’s election. Meaning the only complaint Loeffler and Perdue had about the Secretary of State’s process is that he allowed Democrats to vote.
Georgia’s election procedures were something that both parties agreed to prior to the election. In addition, Georgia’s absentee voting policies for this election was
passed into law by Georgia’s
Republican
state legislature
. So unless there was a “secret coup” within Georgia’s Republican party, it’s highly unlikely that the system was “rigged” in Democrats’ favor.
But as we know from other states, this is not a “new” issue. As we saw in
Pennsylvania
, when Republicans bragged about how their re-elections were practically sealed after new restrictive voter ID laws were put into place; as we saw in
North Carolina
when Republicans were “encouraged” by how African American voter turnout had been decreasing; and as we’ve seen in
many other states
, nothing makes Republicans more afraid than the idea of a state’s election results reflecting the true opinions of their citizens. Because if they did, then they would lose. Well, in Georgia, they did.
Thanks to registration and GOTV efforts,
led largely by Stacey Abrams
, Georgia saw nearly a 50% increase in African American voter turnout from 2016. In the vein of the late John Lewis, the famous Georgia Democrat who risked his life countless times to even be given the right to vote, record voter turnout is something to be celebrated. Record African American voter turnout is something to be celebrated. But for Loeffler and Perdue, apparently not.
What motivates Loeffler and Perdue is not “inspiring civic engagement from the citizens of Georgia.” What motivates them is their desire to suppress the African American vote and hope that it will guarantee uncontested Republican control of Georgia for years to come. Imagine – coming from the state of John Lewis, and calling on your Secretary of State to resign for no reason other than the fact that a high number of African Americans voted in the last election. Republican officials had every vested interest you can imagine to disenfranchise African Americans; and yet, Democrats still won the state fair and square.
Thanks to registration and GOTV efforts,
led largely by Stacey Abrams
, Georgia saw nearly a 50% increase in African American voter turnout from 2016.
So, coming into Georgia’s U.S. Senate run-offs, let’s all play into Loeffler and Perdue’s worst fears, and let’s all vote this January.
Here are some key dates for Georgians to remember as the runoff races kick off, according to the
Georgia Secretary of State's website
:
December 7
: Voter registration deadline to vote in the federal runoff election
December 14
: Advanced in-person or early voting begins for the general election runoff for federal offices
January 5, 2021
: Federal runoff election day
