What do Ellen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Al Gore and I have in common? We’re all in the Earth Day edition of PEOPLE magazine.
As Democrats, we all understand the necessity of saving the planet. But some politicians don’t have results in mind — for them, slogans suffice. Not me. In 37 years in the Navy, including jobs in legislative affairs and policy planning, I learned how to accomplish my priorities in Washington — from getting African women access to technical education to starting the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency that identifies and retrieves the remains of veterans of foreign wars.
And when it comes to the climate crisis, I’m a policy wonk. Here’s my quote from PEOPLE:
We need to pass legislation to price carbon. We need to invest in new technology for carbon sequestration. And we need to retool agriculture for the 21st century to bring Iowa to the front of the pack in fighting climate change. This state should be a pioneer in new technologies and a model for the rest of the world. We can do this.
This is the level of detail and expertise we need when it comes to battling the climate crisis, fixing healthcare for ordinary Americans, or beating back Wall Street’s influence in Washington. Sloganeering won’t do. We need principled and practiced leadership that won’t come with training wheels.
But I need your help to get there. Please pitch in what you can to my campaign — and if you can, pick up a copy of PEOPLE.
