I didn’t see this last night, but the Courier-Journal is reporting it today:
Investigation launched into LMPD, National Guard fatal shooting of West End restaurant owner
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Gov. Andy Beshear has ordered Kentucky State Police to investigate the early Monday incident that featured Louisville Metro Police and National Guard personnel fatally shooting the owner of a popular West End barbecue business at 26th Street and Broadway.
The victim was David McAtee, the popular owner of a barbecue business next to the Dino's Food Mart parking lot where the shooting occurred around 12:15 a.m. Monday, McAtee's nephew told The Courier Journal.
Louisville police and National Guard troops were breaking up a "large crowd" that had gathered in the parking lot outside Dino's Food Mart in the Russell neighborhood when someone shot at them, LMPD Chief Steve Conrad said this morning.
"Officers and soldiers began to clear the lot and at some point were shot at," Conrad said. "Both LMPD and National Guard members returned fire."
Conrad said it is unclear if the person who was shot was the person who also fired at the officers.
Mr. McAtee is black, by the way. And I cannot imagine that he would be foolish enough to shoot at the police and/or National Guard. But I wasn’t there, and will we ever find out? I don’t think anyone knows who did the shooting of those seven people on Saturday during another protest. But some assholes are bringing guns and are using them during the protests.
The reason it will be difficult to tell who brought a gun is that Kentucky is awash in guns. Some will point fingers that it is the West End and Downtown Louisville that is the problem. That is where a lot of the black population lives. But I know lots of white rednecks with guns in Kentucky. And they do not live far from those areas where the protestors congregate.
Tragically, we have another black citizen who has been added to the pile of the dead by the authorities, and this is going to go on. I don’t think it has been this bad in Louisville since the anti-busing riots back in 1975.

McAtee was not the one who did the shooting. There appears to have been ONE shot fired — it sounded like a shot from a gentleman who was recording from the parking lot of DINO’s. And it is now been reported that McAtee was trying to protect his niece when he was killed in the cross fire by the LMPD and the National Guard.
And guess what? There is no police body cam video because 1) the officers didn’t turn them on or 2) they didn’t even have them. This is in direct violation of police regulations. Our corporate mayor has finally decided to fire the police chief who was scheduled to leave office at the end of June.
Now, I call Mayor Fischer corporate as a back handed insult. He does not want to rock the boat. And he is claiming that it will take another TWO or THREE months to investigate what happened to Breonna Taylor. Even Governor Andy Beshear says that is unacceptable. It should not take MONTHS to determine what happened to Breonna Taylor. This is coming from our former State Attorney General, and Beshear would not say this to just throw another Democrat under the bus. This situation is that fucking bad, and Beshear is saying that it will not take months to determine what happened to McAtee.
