I don’t know why this phrase popped into my mind when I was thinking about writing about whether or not Trump was capable in any way, shape, or form, of changing. Yesterday I tried to speculate as to how he would handle losing the election and wrote about the five stages of grief.
Today I got to thinking about whether losing the election could just possibly nudge this person with at least two severe personality disorders, narcissistic personality disorder and antisocial personalty disorder (sometimes called sociopathic disorder) which are not considered to be amenable to treatment might, due to circumstances, actually make positive changes.
If you were listening to pop music in 1958 you are familiar with the Johnny Mathias hit love song “The Twelfth of Never” which you can listen to the moving and beautiful song in this YouTube (which began with a Joe Biden ad when I watched it).
Johnny Mathias says in the song that the twelfth of never is a long, long time. I thought I’d look up the actual meaning of the saying and determined that rather than being a long, long time the twelfth of never is usually meant to mean a date in the future that will never come.
The answer to my question about Trump ever admitting he was wrong, or changing in any positive way for that matter, is this then will indeed happen on the twelfth of never.
But wait, there’s more.
Ironically, or perhaps because the Internet spirits were sending me a message, when I looked in the Urban Dictionary to check out what they said the 12th of never meant this was the word of the day which was just under it.
This led me to a make stream of conscious connection between the subject I began to write about and what I was thinking about yesterday afternoon when I watched Trump signing his police executive order surrounded by members of law enforcement not wearing masks.
After the signing his sycophants mingled in the Rose Garden chatting with each other. Everyone was standing cheek by jowl without wearing masks. Below are screen grabs from this CNN video which begin at 6:30 minutes. It looked to me like a Petri dish for Covid-19.
Related to above: It just came out that Putin is not afraid of looking unmanly. Unlike Trump he is well aware that the virus doesn’t respect the power of his office. Read: Russia Sets Up ‘Disinfection Tunnel’ To Protect Putin From Virus, State Media Says.
Another random thought, not that any thoughts are truly random. I wonder if the 12th of Never will be the day Trump after being diagnosed with Covid-19 thinks that he can wish it away but ends up in intensive care on a respirator.
Could Trump change as he faces the imminent prospect of death?
.
My opinion which is based on personal experience and accounts from clients is that some severely narcissistically cruel people who were convinced they wouldn't survive an illness, even in one case before going into surgery after a pulmonary embolism, is that they seem to change, make amends to family, and apologize for the wrongs they did to hurt people close to them. Then after beating the odds and surviving they go back to their old ways and in one case I know of claim they never said what they said.
I may be cynical but my hunch is that even on his deathbed Trump wouldn’t admit he ever was wrong about anything.
The Poll
What do you think? Do you think facing death Trump would have either a religious (unlikely in my opinion) of secular version of a “come to Jesus” moment:
A come-to-Jesus moment may refer to the moment in which a person has a religious conversion and dedicates his life to Jesus. However, the term has also taken on a more secular meaning. A come-to-Jesus moment may refer to that point in time when someone has a realization, becomes enlightened, understands the core values that must be preserved in a situation. The phrase come-to-Jesus moment is often used when describing the moment when a politician, employee or child understands that he is on the wrong path and must change direction, it is often considered a positive development.
