Today the New York Times followed up on the blockbuster story that Trump knew of Putin’s bounty on US troops and did nothing about it. In “Spies and Commandos Warned Months Ago of Russian Bounties on U.S. Troops”, Eric Schmitt and Adam Goldman write:
The crucial information that led the spies and commandos to focus on the bounties included the recovery of a large amount of American cash from a raid on a Taliban outpost that prompted suspicions. Interrogations of captured militants and criminals played a central role in making the intelligence community confident in its assessment that the Russians had offered and paid bounties in 2019
Schmitt and Goldman go on to write that Trump not only denies being “brief or told” about the intelligence report, but he’s also suggesting that the whole story is a “hoax”.
This is Trump’s standard procedure: lie and deflect and counterattack, lie and deflect and counterattack. It’s not gonna work this time, Donald.
