Fellow Kossacks,
I come to make an appeal. As the long moral arc of the universe inevitably bends toward justice — to deliver the spanking of many lifetimes to Donald Trump and the GOP, it is important for us to stress that democracy is not a spectator sport. Joe Biden is winning; but we cannot be complacent. It’s important to act as if the polling lead is not there; not so we can engage in collective pants-soiling, but so we can come together as on nation. The 2020 election requires all hands on deck. The stakes are too high to simply count on Donald Trump to keep shooting himself in the foot. Four monthsmight as well be six lifetimes for all of us living in the Trump era.
Joe Biden isn’t the most exciting candidate out there; but so what? Do you want democracy; or do you want to go to Disneyland? The Biden Campaign, on the other hand, gives me plenty to be excited about. In lless than six months, Jen O’Malley-Dillon has helped Joe Biden build a campaign operation that represents the diversity of the Democratic Party. Technology has enabled the Biden campaign to make volunteering easier than ever before. As progressives, it’s more important for us than ever to get off our assess and participate in our democracy. Imagine the privilege of witnessing the 1918 flu pandemic, the Great Depression, the Civil Rights Movement, Watergate, The Civil War, and the Dust Bowl all at the same time. We are living through history so we may as well be part of it. It doesn’t take much. Just an hour every day spent working the phones can make a difference.
We Americans like to talk a big game about democracy. Now is a great time to put our put up or shut up.
Why do this NOW?
This is more of a WHY NOT situation.
Sure, Joe Biden gets two things out of this arrangement:
1. An army of callers to mobilize voters for November.
2. free labor.
At this point, however, there are also real benefits for volunteers:
1. It distracts you from the horse race long enough to forget the existential dread that comes from Donald Trump being in charge of the machinery of the federal government.
2. It’s an opportunity to talk to fellow Americans instead of arguing with strangers on the Internet.
3. It’s an opportunity to be part of our democracy when so much is at stake.
4. It allows you to face your children and grandchildren and tell them dad/mom/bobo/nana fought the good fight when it counted.
As for NOW, it’s pretty important to get started early while the Biden Campaign is still making volunteer training a priority. The idea is that volunteers help organize their states to create an army in each state that can be mobilized to camping or make calls in swing states closer to November. The week before the election in November will be devoted to GOTV. Starting early is critical.
We cannot take our democracy for granted. The Constitution invests us, The People, as the source of the legitimacy of our government. WE have a lot of power; and you know what needs to be done: to act with said power to create a better world, not just for ourselves; but for future generations, and for all who look to America for inspiration.
