At a campaign stop in Kissimmee, Florida to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Joe Biden was joined by entertainers Ricky Martin, Luis Fonsi, Eva Longoria, plus Rep. Darren Soto of Florida, and Osceola County Commission Chair Viviana Janer.
During the event he announced the release of a detailed plan for Puerto Rico, entitled “The Biden-Harris Plan For Recovery, Renewal and Respect for Puerto Rico.”
Given the continued depredations suffered by Puerto Rico under the Trump regime, this announcement from the campaign is both timely and necessary.
Biden’s announcement:
When I woke up this morning to take a look at the news coverage of the event, I was elated to see that major mainstream media was giving it coverage.
It’s also getting major coverage in Spanish language press.
However, what was trending on Twitter was “Despacito.” For those of you who don’t follow music trends, “Despacito,” a 2017 song by Puerto Rican artists Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, is the most streamed music video of all time. As of this writing, it’s got nearly 7 billion views.
Right-wing trolls, and Trump supporters are making fun of the fact that Biden smiled after being introduced by Luis Fonsi, took out his cell phone, and played a few bars of the song.
Dumb and dumber Republicants. Diss Despacito at your own peril.
Update: Donald Trump got into the act—repeatedly tweeting an edited version of the moment, which was eventually labeled as “manipulated media” by Twitter.
Early on Wednesday morning, President Trump joined the fray — but in the video he tweeted, it wasn’t “Despacito” playing from Biden’s phone. It was N.W.A’s notorious 1988 single “F--- tha Police.”
I’m looking forward to more from Biden and Kamala Harris on their plans to address disparities for Latinos and especially those for Puerto Rico.
