Not all Republicans regard the ongoing “war on mail” as a win for their side. As a matter of fact, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) looks at it as a loser for his side. This is not a rumor. This is from an Axios article where the author, Alayna Treene, pointed out one of the major issues regarding mail-in voting: the fact that seniors prefer it over showing up at the polls.
McCarthy said he's spent hours telling Trump that this preoccupation will hurt the president's own re-election, as well as Republicans running for Congress.
- "I tried to show him ... you know who is most afraid of COVID? Seniors. And if they're not going to go vote, period, we're screwed," McCarthy told me.
“Scoop: Kevin McCarthy warns Trump's war on mail could screw GOP” by Alayna Treene, Axios, 9/6/2020
The desperation in his voice jumps off the page as he scopes out what could happen if Trump carries on with his hatred of mail-in balloting. In essence, he is alluding to a wipe-out in Congress if things keep going the way they are going. He seems to understand that Covid-19 could easily be back with a vengeance in the fall (which scientists have been warning us about, but, you know, Republicans...). This would depress in-person voting, especially of seniors, which Republicans have been depending on for far too long to carry districts.
Is it possible that this could portent the USPS getting more money in an upcoming spending bill? We’ll see.
What else could this portend? Feel free to comment.
