As a parent, I know that there are a few things that will instantly catch my attention. Politically, I can disagree with someone, and that is OK. We can strongly disagree. They could even insult me or degrade my position, and I’m OK with throwing a few punches back to express my viewpoint. I may not like it, but I recognize that sometimes these things happen.
Marjorie Taylor Greene, who now serves on the Education Committee of all things, doesn’t seem to grasp that. Like millions of Americans, I have a family member with developmental disabilities. Years ago, slurs were used against them to denigrate and to deny them their own status as a human being. Marjorie Taylor Greene thinks using the “R” word is perfectly fine, apparently, just with a backhanded “I mean nothing against..”
“I’m not trying to talk down on people with Down Syndrome. But that’s what these people are..”
How dare you. Absolutely how dare you. How dare the Republican caucus promote and get behind Marjorie Taylor Greene and hand her a position on a committee tasked with educating our children with such backward, offensive ideas.
Students around the country attend schools with special education programs, with opportunities to uplift themselves. They become productive members of society. Frankly, I would trust the judgment of my son far more than I would trust a single word from the lips of Marjorie Taylor Greene.
The Chairman of the committee she is in knows all about those who use slurs to devalue others. He knows that educators spend their time lifting up, not pushing down our children.
From the beginning, I have believed that Space-laser touting, conspiracy believing Marjorie Taylor Greene represents everything that shouldn’t be in elected office. Now, we learn exactly how she thinks about people with disabilities, and we know Republicans will reward her by putting her on a committee with direct involvement in the education around those with disabilities.
The Republican Party is at fault here, and they all should answer for this horror show. Do they stand for this moral outrage? Are they asking for their own leadership to remove her from this committee? If not, save your breath Republicans on ever making a claim to me about morality again.
