My partner and I were a twosome , paired at the last moment with a retired white couple, busy sharing complaints with the public golf course starter (the guy who sets you up to tee off.)
“If they (the Democrats) beat us in the mid-terms, it’s over for us (and anything decent.)” Meaning America was over.
Why? I asked, politely, sensing a debate would be pointless.
1. The media, namely CNN and MSNBC, are poisoning the country with lies and were a mere extension of the Democratic Party.
Okay, they are slanted I allowed, but isn’t Fox batting that way for the other side?
“Oh please, that’s nothing compared to the lies of the left. And Can you believe-
2. The way they allow the Transgenders to trample sports teams and our lives? What kind of indecency is this?” (No they didn’t care that these are a tiny minority in larger scheme, it was indicative of left wing lack of morality. The wife said: “she was from the ‘old school’ that didn’t allow such nonsense and let’s just get back to lower taxes and no government.) and:
3. “The new voting laws, I mean why can’t these blacks step up and produce real ID? What’s unfair about that? They wanna vote with no ID! ” and
4. “speaking of those people, what about the insane and widespread antifa riots the left sponsored and encouraged last summer. Out of control, I tell ya. ”
Ahem, care to comment about the Jan 6 Insurrection, I asked? No, that was peanuts compared to our cities burning down all over the place.
5. “And oh, the unbelievable multitudes now crossing our borders.” the wife added.
Uh, I don’t recall Biden opening the floodgates there by any means. She rolled her eyes at me; of course untold illegals are gushing in.
The starter then pointed at me and my partner. “Bet you voted for Biden and are sorry now, right?”
I replied: “You do know that the Democrats agreed to joint bipartisan investigations of the riots and January 6 and the Republicans refused.” He wasn’t interested in addressing that.
Luckily it was time to tee off, and the four of us avoided more political talk during the game. We didn’t even get to COVID or the election BIG LIE.
We and this other couple may be neighbors but live in two very different realities. I wanted to reassure them, but is their fear real or a cover for something darker?
As in other face to face conversations I had with Republicans, they really believe that hoards of jungle frenzied blacks stormed our cities and set them afire. That the insurrection was a few slightly out of control Trumpers who were no big deal. That the acceptance of Transgenders and Gays herald the breakdown of decent society. That the Dems have stripped immigration restrictions and the many thousands of illegal vagrants now just pour in. That Fox tells the truth and CNN and MSNBC are puppets of the far left.
They fear a Liberal Government siphoning their taxes, welcoming illegal criminal multitudes, handing our institutions over to deranged immoral LBGTQ whatevers, and letting the black bogeymen and women hold society hostage in city streets.
They claim to be as afraid of their stable, decent, free-enterprise world being thrown to liberal chaos — as we are afraid of Trumpist fascism and white supremacy. Both sides now fear the other will tear down their “America” as they knew it.
Would a joint bipartisan commission on both the riots and Jan 6, presenting actual facts help matters? Or are too many of us predisposed no matter what evidence you present?
After the game my partner said: I don’t think it’s about truth so much. I think it’s down to: are you embracing racism or not.
