At the core, so many of the challenges facing the world are driven by the power of money and the greed of those who have it. (Not for nothing is Putin a king of thieves and one of the richest men in the world if not the richest.)
Look at any issue, and it's a near certainty that doing anything to address it would affect somebody's wealth - so they block any action.
Affordable health care, a living wage, a clean environment, racial justice, all the way up to climate change. Follow the money. It's killing us and the planet.
Jonathan Pie is a fictional newscaster created by the British comedian Tom Walker. It’s a sign of the times that ‘comedians’ are the ones giving us the hard truths while too many journalists are a joke — or worse.
Give the New York Times credit for letting us see this. (They have a lot to make up for, but that’s a subject for another day.) Jonathan Pie takes 7 minutes to explain why Britain is basically owned by Putin and the Russian oligarchs. (The link should allow safe passage through The NY Times paywall.)
To fully detail the hold of money on the U.S. would take much longer, although just looking at all of the Russian real estate investments in the U.S. would be illuminating. (Didn’t we have some former real estate guy doing deals with Russia? And how about that aluminum plant in Mitch McConnell’s Kentucky?)
