Every new document describing Trump adviser John Eastman's efforts to erase the 2020 United States presidential election seems more outrageous than the last; the latest release is of an email to a Pennsylvania Republican advising state lawmakers to simply declare that a certain percentage of votes would be "discarded" to account for unproven Republican-claimed fraud. Very fascist stuff, and a reminder that our democracy remains even now on the brink—because Eastman and Trump had the assistance of a staggering number of House Republicans, state Republicans, and others who were all aggressively working to nullify the votes of Americans who didn't vote their way. Changing the vote totals until they can announce the “right” answer is one of the defining characteristics of autocracy; the hundreds of Republican lawmakers who pressured for such measures were advocating for the seditious overthrow of government.
In other news, Supreme Court conservatives continue to leak furiously—and it may be Chief Justice John Roberts they mean to damage. Collins continues to recuperate after an unknown chalk artist wrote a pro-rights message on a neighborhood sidewalk—hey, it really hurt her feelings—and meanwhile, her Senate colleagues joined her today to filibuster a bill that would protect federal abortion rights. Yeah.
