This blog will be short and to the point: Let us not forget that the leaked ruling to overturn Rose v. Wade is a religiously biased one based on the subjective belief that there is such a thing as a soul, and that it assigned to the fetus at the moment of conception, making it a human life and murder to intervene. Politics has dictated that argument not be used to support women’s reproductive rights. But it is the gorilla in the room and should be brought up if done cleverly and sensitively. Because many religious interpretations claim the “soul” only gets assigned at birth. So denying women from conception or shortly after the right to abortion is entirely a law based on religious dogma and there is no proof that could pass muster in a criminal court other than the Supreme Court itself.
Exposing the religious bias behind the anti-abortion movement is never done. Yet this movement can be attacked on religious grounds as well as being a violation of the reproductive rights of women. In the distant past for example, women often went to their local Catholic clergy for what were primitive and dangerous forms of abortion. It never became an issue for most Christian churches until the 20th century and was politically motivated as church attendance and memberships declined.
By way of disclosure, I am a lifelong Catholic.
