Pete Davidson bid an emotional farewell to Saturday Night Live this past weekend. He was the youngest cast member ever hired, arriving in 2014 at age 20. He joked, “Back then, I was just, like, a skinny kid and no one knew what race I was. And now everyone knows I'm white because I became hugely successful while barely showing up to work." He then pointed out that three years ago, he was lambasted by everyone on Fox News, including Tucker Carlson, for making a joke about Rep. Dan Crenshaw, who lost an eye and wears an eye patch, saying he looked like “a hit man in a porno movie.”
Tucker Carlson was outraged, saying SNL sank “to a new low” by insulting a wounded veteran. He was joined by Greg Gutfeld, Eric Trump, and the Republican National Committee, which demanded that NBC apologize to Dan Crenshaw. By the way, that’s exactly what Pete Davidson did. He invited Dan Crenshaw to appear on SNL to apologize in person, and Crenshaw was gracious about it.
Fast forward to this month, when Tucker was talking with fellow Russian agent Tulsi Gabbard on his show. Dan Crenshaw said something pro-Ukraine that, (surprise), Tucker Carlson didn’t like. This is how he responded:
This was much worse than what Pete said, and yet not a word of condemnation from Greg Gutfeld, the RNC, or anyone from the right wing. In fact, everyone at Fox News has been completely silent.
Pete Davidson let them have it:
"A lot has changed. In three years, Fox News went from calling me a monster for making fun of Congressman Dan Crenshaw's eye patch to also making fun of Dan Crenshaw's eye patch. Tucker Carlson called him 'Eye Patch McCain.' That's two veterans in one insult."
To be fair, this is not the worst thing that Tucker Carlson has ever done—not by a long shot. He has literally been featured on Russian state television promoting the Kremlin’s lies about Ukraine. He claimed Democrats made up “the concept of sexual harassment.” He supported Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination hearings by offering to send booze to sexual assault survivors. Heck, he pushes white supremacy on every show, even promoting white nationalist theories such as “the great replacement” that have directly inspired racists to kill. He’s the worst.
Yet it’s important to remember that Tucker Carlson is, on top of everything else, a complete asshole. I doubt you’ll receive an apology, Pete. But thanks for the laughs.
