This is so fucked up:
Pennsylvania Republican gubernatorial nominee Doug Mastriano has repeatedly used his Facebook page to compare abortion to the Holocaust, an analogy that Holocaust remembrance officials have called “unacceptable” and “abhorrent.” In one instance, Mastriano shared a cartoon which claimed that Roe v. Wade is “so much” worse than the Holocaust and featured a Nazi bowing down to the number of “USA Abortions.”
Mastriano is a right-wing commentator, January 6 insurrectionist, and Pennsylvania state senator. He’s also a frequent guest in right-wing media.
Mastriano has a long history of pushing extreme commentaries, including content that promotes QAnon, lies about the 2020 election being stolen, anti-Muslim bigotry, and COVID-19 conspiracy theories and falsehoods. Forward recently reported that Mastriano “has in the past invoked Nazi-era analogies in the debate over gun control.”
On his Facebook page, the Republican gubernatorial nominee has repeatedly compared abortion to the Holocaust.
Click the piece from Media Matters For America. It details all kinds of fucked up posts Mastriano has made. Here’s one of them:
Democrats have already been pounding Mastriano on his stance on abortion rights:
Democratic groups will kick-start their gubernatorial general election campaign on TVs across the state in a new commercial that attacks GOP nominee state Sen. Doug Mastriano’s commitment to a strict ban abortion.
Democratic groups and their allies, including the Democratic Governors Association, will spend nearly $2.7 million on commercials that cite a leaked U.S. Supreme Court draft decision that would end 50 years of protection for women seeking abortions, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
The ad seeks to highlight Mr. Mastriano’s views on abortion, arguing that he would send the state “backwards.” It replays Mr. Mastriano’s comments during a gubernatorial debate last month, where he said he supports a total ban on abortion and would not permit certain exceptions, such as circumstances where the woman was impregnated due to rape or incest, or if the mother’s life is in danger.
The ad showed Mr. Mastriano saying, “‘My body, my choice’ is ridiculous nonsense.”
And Attorney General Josh Shapiro (D. PA) has been emphasizing that he will be an ardent protector of abortion rights as Governor:
Attorney General Josh Shapiro, the only Democrat running for governor of Pennsylvania, vowed to veto any bills banning abortion at a rally in Philadelphia Friday — days after news of a leaked draft opinion this week seemed to spell the downfall of Roe v. Wade.
“They’re coming for all your rights, and I’ll be there to defend you every single step of the way,” Shapiro said.
Abortion would remain legal in Pennsylvania if the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the landmark ruling. Pa. would likely see a massive influx of people from nearby states seeking abortions.
But a Democratic governor is expected to be key to maintaining abortion protections in Pennsylvania, as current Governor Tom Wolf has vetoed several bills that would further restrict abortion access passed by the Republican-controlled General Assembly. Wolf has promised to continue vetoing abortion restrictions during his remaining few months left in office. Every Republican running for governor supports banning or limiting abortions.
