This morning was going to be love songs, but I couldn’t get it together in time (a combination of busy, distracted, and lazy). But it is a very pleasant 75o F and, for the first time in a long while, the rains will not be here until after noon. Looking around my patio this morning, I can see that this weekend is going to involve a truckload of weeding and trimming overgrown Lantana and Yew and an invasive weed we call “wheat grass.” All the rain will make it easier to pull—but that’s little consolation when compared to the sheer volume those same rains produce.
I have Chet Baker on in the background because I’m in the mood to keep things slightly blue. Not based on innate or inner sadness but in order to curtail the progress of the day—to delay the rising sun and slow the second hand to a peaceful pace. These are mornings I want to stretch and hold, mornings deserving of caresses and careful attention. I don’t exactly know, but I feel I deserve a moment’s respite just for making it this far: life’s participation award, I guess. The reality is that we earn so little and want so much. We’ve convinced ourselves we deserve the world without having to work for that privilege.
These are the mornings I have to remind myself that this combination of busy, distracted, and lazy wastes the most precious currency I have to spend~time. I woke promising myself this one thing—that I won’t waste this weekend. I’ll wake early, be productive, and end the day tired and happy. Not in the momentary, Promethean way but a genuine happiness with having had the opportunity to be better than I was only the day before. We’ll see how that works out.
Cheers all and happy Friday.
