Once again, I have to delete a perfectly good, well, actually flaky “woe is me” open thread because I find a story on the internet that makes me see red.
I was reading my fb feed when a story from Alternet scrolled past and I backed up and started reading while sputtering and growling.
According to the article, SCOTUS has another time bomb on their docket called, Health and Hospital Corp. of Marion County, Indiana vs. Talevski will allow states to end or cut care for a variety of social safety net programs. I’m talking SNAP, WIC, MEDICAID, ETC.
Just imagine all those Republican governors and legislatures salivating at the thought of throwing all of us “takers” off of our lifelines.
You think the homeless crisis is bad now? Wait until the Republican led states get the okay from Alito & Co. to use their own “discretion” about federal monies allocated for section 8 vouchers or SNAP benefits.
This is about “State’s rights” on steroids.
2.1 Million people receive housing assistance thru Section 8 (including your humble diarist)
42 Million people receive SNAP benefits (including me)
6.87 Million households receive WIC benefits
88,978,791 Americans are enrolled in Medicaid & Chip. (me too)
I’ve been sick all week and I thought I was going to slide with a open thread diary and coast into an early bedtime. Nope. Congress won’t be able to fix this problem if SCOTUS decides to make states their own little fiefdoms who can decide who gets help and who does not. And, once again, I messed up the poll. Blame the cough medicine and vote however you think is best.
Well, that’s my f***ing problem this week, What’s yours?
Wow, I’m on the Rec list, thanks everyone.
