How many other states have not climed their money? I asume that there are readers on Daily Kos from all states and probably teachers and school administrators as well. A few well placed phone calls to local school boards and state representatives might be a gold mine for many school districts.
From the Missouri Independent Newspaper
Several Interns of state Rep. Deb Lavender in Missouri;
“... spent months cross-checking spreadsheets to pinpoint school districts who had not yet claimed pandemic-era federal funds for homeless students.
Those federal dollars are part of the American Rescue Plan and must be budgeted by September. A large part of the interns’ project was calling districts to notify them that they had money that could expire if they didn’t act quickly.
So far, they helped districts claim $1.15 million in funds in four months that can be used for a range of services for homeless students — from buying washers and dryers to temporary hotel stays and transit cards.
“We had multiple school districts call back and say, ‘We have twenty grand in the bank that we can use to help homeless students? No one really told us,’” Bono said in an interview with The Independent.
Most of the districts the interns reached had no idea they had funding available, Nguyen said.”
This is funding for homeless students. I was un-awre that hteir have been programs for homeless children since 1987. According to Housing Matters;
“Created in 1987 in response to growing concern over housing stability among school-aged children, the McKinney-Vento Act tries to ensure that children experiencing homelessness have equal access to educational opportunities, despite their housing instability challenges. It aims to serve the more than one million students identified every year as experiencing homelessness.”
And then of course our current President is involved.
“the Biden-Harris administration’s announcement of its “All In” campaign to reduce homelessness nationwide by 25 percent, homelessness is now one of Americans’ top issues. With the rise in concern over homelessness, there’s also renewed focus on children experiencing homelessness and the issues they face.” housingmatters.urban.org/…
If you are going to share an article from Daily Kos, this would be a good one to share. Thanks
