Welcome to the Weekly Fiction WIP Thread! This is a weekly community diary for writers here on Daily Kos to showcase microfiction, ongoing serialized stories, and pieces of larger works in progress. Feel free to post your works below in a comment!
All Daily Kos fiction writers are welcomed to post chapters and excerpts as comments in the Fiction Works-In-Progress threads.
As this is a new weekly diary, things are still a bit under development. Pardon our dust as we get settled in and build something together. World-building is something of a passion of mine, and I’ve got a ton of resources I’ve accumulated for it over the years. Perhaps we’ll start with that next week: all stories need a setting, after all.
If you’re wanting to post some of your writing, this is the place to do it! Just post it in a comment here in the diary. I recommend writing it out first in a format-free text editor, like Notepad or Wordpad (if you’re on a Windows device), then copying and pasting it into the Daily Kos comment to avoid formatting issues. At the top of your comment, use the header format button to embiggen the title of the work in progress from which your material comes, so readers can find it from week to week.
The “H” pointed to by the arrow is the Header button
If you would like feedback, be sure to say so in bold (the “B” format button next to H) at the beginning or end of your post. Readers, please ensure your feedback is constructive (this does not mean it has to be only positive, but it should always be actionable and sincere advice; e.g. compare “this protagonist is terrible” vs “I didn’t feel a connection to your protagonist”) and limit it to writers who request it. Writers, please ensure you are comfortable receiving feedback and commentary before requesting it in your post. Together we can keep this a positive place to share our work, our progress, and indulge in our hobby.
A WORD OF WARNING
If you are planning to publish your works, be aware that some publishers and agents may not be willing to accept a piece where parts of it are available publicly online. These community diaries exist in a gray area between private community and public posting, but you should assume a publisher or agent will consider it fully public and work from there.
If you intend to self-publish on Amazon or other avenues, this isn’t really a concern. If you’re not intending to publish at all and just want to share your writing with others, this is not a concern. But, if you’d like to submit the piece you’re working on to an agent or publisher, you should be aware that posting portions of it here may make that impossible. This is not a certainty, but it’s worth noting since there are enough hurdles to getting represented or published as it is without accidentally piling on a few more.
