According to Leo Shane III of Defense News, “the House Armed Services Committee’s draft of the annual defense authorization bill would mandate the automatic registration of all males between ages 18 and 26 living in America in the Selective Service System, the federal database used for a military draft in case of a national emergency.” To wit, www.defensenews.com/... Proponents of the language argue that “this provision would ensure that in the event of a military draft, the government would not need to expend resources on advertising to entice the public to join the armed forces . Moreover, it would remedy the decline in registrations since the option was removed from Federal Student Loan Applications.”
Conscientious objectors, by contrast, assert that a system that automatically registers them for mandatory conscription violates their pacifistic convictions.
The mainstream media rarely reports on the language used in such bills. “This bill, approved unanimously at the committee stage, has yet to advance through the full House and Senate.”
What do members of the Progressive community think about such proposals? Bernard Rostker (Former Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness 2000-2001), who is clearly not a pacifist, has written an in depth article about how the “all volunteer” force without relying on the draft has fared quite well in the past 50 years.
