Reuters reports that the closure of the Rafah crossing since Israel’s attack on that city which commenced on May 7th, 2024 has had a catastrophic effect on the flow of humanitarian aid into the strip. With 900K Gazans internally displaced without lifesaving provisions and subjected to aerial bombardment and tank fire, it was disturbing to view the Reuters photograph of rotting food on the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing. “For one month perishables have been decomposing in the North African sun.” PM Netanyahu’s stubborn refusal to heed warnings from the entire world not to embark on the Rafah operation without safeguarding the civilians in Gaza has led to this obscene mise-en-scene. The Egyptians contend that aid trucks would not have withstood the fighting at the border zone and feared that desperate Gazans under bombardment would flee into the Sinai, displacing them from their homeland yet again.
