Welcome 🌻 to Friday’s Roundup of Good News!
Many of the GNR authors have written about the importance of hope.
Why? Because the other side wants us demoralized. Because, when people have no hope, most will not bother to try. And the easiest battle to win is where the other side does not bother to show up.
Besides, our small deeds, summed together, are making huge differences. We have been outperforming in many elections, both special and midterms.
We are organizing, we are donating, we are postcarding, we are registering.
Our enthusiasm, our intensity, is way up.
So keep up the hope, and if you don’t feel it in a particular moment — and I admit that I certainly don’t always feel it — keep trying anyway.
Come on in, dear gnusies, and see what the good guys are doing and how the bad guys keep finding out!
Regular Scheduled Programming
No one here is naïve; we are aware of the many who are fighting to destroy our country. Some of us expected it: the cheating, the lying, the chaos, and yes, even the attempts to cling to power despite the clear will of the people. But we are here to read the efforts and the positive results of those (including us and our fellow gnus) who are working so hard to save our country from those very bad people. We are furious with them for what they are doing and we are letting them know. Remember:
💙 There are more of us than there are of them.
💛 They are terrified when we organize. THERE IS LOTS OF EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE TERRIFIED!
💔 They want us to be demoralized. The best way to keep up your spirits is to fight. So, take the time to recharge your batteries, but find ways to contribute to the well-being of our country and our world.

👎 🌵 AZ Senate repeals 1864 abortion ban Kate Riga Talking Points Memo
A couple Arizona Senate Republicans crossed over Wednesday to help Democrats repeal the state’s 1864 ban as national Republicans hope to avert electoral punishment.
The senators, T.J. Shope (R) and Shawnna Bolick (R), had announced their intention to vote for repeal ahead of time. Bolick is married to Arizona Supreme Court Justice Clint Bolick — part of the majority in upholding the 1864 ban. Bolick detailed her own pregnancy complications and abortion while explaining her vote.
Irate Republicans slowed down the process Wednesday, complaining about the bill’s path to the floor and requesting multiple roll call votes. “We’re getting rolled,” complained Sen. Jake Hoffman (R), recently indicted for his role in the 2020 fake elector scheme. ✂️
In a sign of how dangerous the 1864 ban was to Republicans’ political future, everyone from Donald Trump to Republican Senate frontrunner Kari Lake (temporarily) called on the legislature to soften the legislation. Lake, who previously cheered the ban, backtracked immediately following its passage, though has gravitated back to her more natural anti-abortion stance in the days since.
Governor Hobbs signed this on Thursday.
Also, Clint Bolick will be on the ballot in November — time to kick him out.
👍 Kennedy wins! A good Kennedy, not a bad one. Carolyn Thompson, Associated Press
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Democratic state Sen. Timothy Kennedy won a special election Tuesday for the New York congressional seat vacated by Democrat Brian Higgins. ✂️
Registration wasn’t Kennedy’s only advantage. The Democrat raised $1.7 million as of April 10, compared with Dickson’s $35,430 total, according to campaign finance reports. Kennedy spent just over $1 million in the off-season election, compared with $21,000 for Dickson as the candidates worked to remind voters to go to the polls.
A blue area, but the money shows the enthusiasm gap. Kennedy won something like 68% to 32%, which is an improvement compared to past performances.
Because of this election, poor Speaker Johnson has only a 1-seat GOP majority, at least for now.
👎 👍 I haven’t had time to follow everything going on in Tennessee, but there’s this:
In case you don’t remember, Justin Jones is one of the Tennesse Three that the Rs tried to expel a while back, because the trio objected to kids being shot in classrooms. They did expel Jones, but he got re-elected. Apparently they have been trying again.
👍 Conservation efforts are making a difference with respect to biodiversity Paige Bennett EcoWatch
A first-of-its-kind study that analyzed hundreds of conservation actions around the world has confirmed that efforts toward preserving wildlife are resulting in measurable achievements.
The international study, published in the journal Science, sought to assess whether conservation efforts were having any positive impacts on biodiversity. Researchers analyzed 186 studies, including 665 trials, and measured changes to biodiversity.
Overall, the researchers found that about two-thirds of the studied conservation actions at minimum slowed biodiversity declines or led to improved biodiversity.
“If you read the headlines about extinction these days, it would be easy to get the impression that we are failing biodiversity — but that’s not really looking at the whole picture,” Penny Langhammer, co-author of the study and executive vice president of Re:wild, told the BBC. “This study provides the strongest evidence to date that not only does conservation improve the state of biodiversity and slow its decline, but when it works, it really works.”
👎 Deleting some lies! Roger Sollenberger: The day after Hunter Biden’s legal team went public with their threat to sue Fox News for defamation, Fox deleted a six-part ”mock trial” miniseries that Biden’s attorneys had targeted as publishing “revenge porn.”
💣 Republicans: Party of Crimes and Chaos 💣
🌵 We be crazy, says the AZ GOP Laurie Roberts Arizona Central
The Arizona Republican Party on Saturday sent a flat out, full-throated, flabbergasting message to the voters of this great state.
We be crazy, they proclaimed.
Party officials, during their state convention, elected none other than indicted Sen. Jake Hoffman and expelled Rep. Liz Harris to represent Arizona on the Republican National Committee.
This, then, is what the once-Grand Old Party is here in the year of our Lord 20SomebodyWakeMeUpWhenThisNightmareIsOver24.
OK, maybe the picks are not completely crazy, as tRump wants the RNC stuffed with people who will deny he is the loser when he loses this November. But I, like Laurie Roberts, am tired of it.
On Monday, Maddow had an amazing segment showing just how awful the GOP party has become. Not just at the federal level, either. They are encouraging the worst and the dimmest in their attempt to regain the Senate. People without credentials, often not living in the state they want to represent.
OK, many don’t have time to watch, so here are a few highlights.
- AZ Senate campaigner Kari Lake is spending all her time in Florida. And apparently annoying tRump.
- David McCormick is running for the Senate in PA. But he lives in CT. That did not work so well when they tried running Mehmet Oz from NJ. While John Fetterman literally had a stroke!
- Tim Sheehy from Minnesota is running in for the Senate in Montana. Well, both states start with M and end with A, so maybe voters won’t notice.
- Mike Rogers, running for the Senate in Michigan, actually lives in Florida, which does seem to attract a lot of the GOP these days.
Worth watching, but I understand that not all can watch.
Reminder about indictments by presidential administration:

One thing the Biden administration has been doing is investing in the population through education. Here are some of Dr. Jill Biden’s prepared remarks for the 1st dinner honoring teachers at the White House.
Thank you, Secretary Cardona. Miguel, Joe and I are so grateful for your work – when you’re around, it’s hard not to feel excited for our future. You know that education can change lives, and you’re fighting every day for our students and their educators.
Second Gentleman Emhoff – Doug – You’re the best second gentleman ever. And I’m so glad to be able to call you a fellow teacher.
Secretaries Becerra and Buttigieg, Carolina, Chasten – thank you, and the other administration officials here, for taking the time to be here tonight.
And we have so many incredible members of Congress joining us who have come out of the classroom or worked in education. I’m grateful to have you here – and we’re all grateful for your work to support our educators.
Welcome to the White House! And the first-ever Teachers of the Year State Dinner.
Tonight, we celebrate you. Because teaching isn’t just a job. It’s a calling.
And all of you were called to this profession for a reason. You believe that a better world is possible – and you make that world real, one student at a time. As you sit here tonight, you don’t just represent yourselves – you represent your entire communities, parents, students, and educators, who thought you were the best of them, and they selected you.
And none of that could happen without the support of our unions.
Randi, Becky – thank you for always showing up for your members. We’re all so grateful for your leadership.
To CCSSO leaders here: we couldn’t do this without you. You are treasured partners.
And CCSSO worked with your principals to present you with a gift from home – the surprise that was on each of your seats tonight. We’re so grateful for all their hard work.
As I’ve traveled the country as your first lady, it’s been my honor to meet so many incredible educators in classrooms and student centers and libraries.
Teachers who redid their lesson plans overnight during the pandemic and came to the rescue as students faced a crisis like never before. Teachers who support our military kids as they start over in their newest school, because the average military kid changes schools between six and nine times before they graduate from high school. Teachers who are helping students find career paths that will change their lives – leading dual enrollment courses, and providing hands-on learning in science labs and carpentry classrooms, so students can take a first step toward a career they love.
I always knew that Joe would be the education President. And he’s delivered on his promises: An amazing Secretary of Education who comes out of the public school classroom. Following a devastating pandemic, he reopened our schools safely and quickly, making historic investments in public schools to support our teachers, the academic and mental health needs of students, community schools, and career and technical education. He fixed student loan relief for public servants.
And he’s fighting to make sure educators are paid what they’re worth.
The Biden administration is doing more than just investing in those who are still in school as educators and educatees. It’s helping out those who were being crushed by student debt.
I love how the Biden administration takes care of stuff so we don’t need to worry about it. Like ways to monitor important infrastructure. FACT SHEET: Biden-Harris Administration Announces New National Security Memorandum on Critical Infrastructure White House Briefing Room
Today, President Biden signed a National Security Memorandum (NSM) to secure and enhance the resilience of U.S. critical infrastructure. The NSM will replace a decade-old presidential policy document on critical infrastructure protection and launch a comprehensive effort to protect U.S. infrastructure against all threats and hazards, current and future. ✂️
The NSM will help ensure U.S. critical infrastructure can provide the Nation a strong and innovative economy, protect American families, and enhance our collective resilience to disasters before they happen – strengthening the nation for generations to come. This NSM specifically:
- Empowers the Department of Homeland Security to lead the whole-of-government effort to secure U.S. critical infrastructure, with the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency acting as the National Coordinator for Security and Resilience. The Secretary of Homeland Security will be required to submit to the President a biennial National Risk Management Plan that summarizes U.S. government efforts to manage risk to the Nation’s critical infrastructure.
- Directs the U.S. Intelligence Community, consistent with the goals outlined in the 2023 National Intelligence Strategy, to collect, produce and share intelligence and information with Federal departments and agencies, State and local partners, and the owners and operators of critical infrastructure. The NSM recognizes private sector owners and operators of critical infrastructure are often our first line of defense against adversaries who target the Nation’s most critical assets and systems.
- Reaffirms the designation of 16 critical infrastructure sectors and a federal department or agency as the Sector Risk Management Agency (SRMA) for each sector. SRMAs have the day-to-day relationships and sector specific expertise to lead risk management and coordination within the designated sectors. The named SRMAs for each sector can be found below.
- Elevates the importance of minimum security and resilience requirements within and across critical infrastructure sectors, consistent with the National Cyber Strategy, which recognizes the limits of a voluntary approach to risk management in the current threat environment.

Top 3 Ds say they will block MTG and rescue Speaker Johnson Andrew Sollender Axios
House Democratic leadership on Tuesday confirmed what has long been rumored: If Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) introduces a motion to oust Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), they will help kill it.
Why it matters: It could be the nail in the coffin for Greene's motion to vacate, which has already struggled due to a lack of Republican support. ✂️
Between the lines: There's also significant discomfort among Democrats with the idea of again joining the GOP's right flank to topple a speaker.
- Democrats did it with Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), but say the former House speaker was uniquely untrustworthy in a way that Johnson isn't.
- Democrats also don't want to see a repeat of the chaos of last fall's speaker vacancy.
The bottom line: "From the very beginning of this Congress, House Democrats have put people over politics and found bipartisan common ground with traditional Republicans in order to deliver real results," the Democratic leaders said.
This is a way of encouraging the less-crazy Rs to do the right thing. It’s also a way of reducing the power of the crazy fringes (on both sides). It lessens the power of tRump and of putin.
I gotta think working with Ds has got to be so much nicer than working with Rs. No thrown ketchup, no punches in the kidneys, actually working on the problem.
📥 Actions You Can Take 📤
Tax-exempt organization complaint referrals. 13909. You can fill this out for the NRA and lots of other organizations. How about if some of us white folk go into some of the MAGA churches and video record what they’re saying?
Voting rights. This may be the biggest issue threatening our democracy right now. Besides contacting your representatives at the state and federal level to do the right thing (depending on who they are), you can support and contact these organizations:
ACLU — American Civil Liberties Union
Democracy Docket — founded by Marc Elias, so important in fighting the challenges after the last election.
Fair Fight — founded by Stacey Abrams
🌱Grass roots. Biden and Harris can do the top-down stuff, but we have to support from the bottom. I don’t know how to deprogram 75 million people, but some things have been written about, such as deep canvassing, and lots of people are talking about this. If you know someone (who did not storm the Capitol), then see if you can be pleasant. Instead of trying to reason with them (logic is obviously not their strong point) distract them with something else. We need to remove the sources of lies and to take down the temperature. If we get more of the Rs to wear masks and to get vaccinated and to vote for Ds, the country will be a better place. We need to coax some of them out of the rabbit holes and diffuse the anger and the crazy.
🏃 Run for something. If you want to run for something, but have no idea what to do, these people will help you. They also like money and volunteers to help those people who are running, so even if you’re not in a position to stand for office, you can help. Note: they are especially planning to target the 57 Rs in local governments who participated in the insurrection.
👎 Defund the seditionists. Defund the seditionists. This is a list with companies that sometimes have donated to the seditionists. The list is long. You will recognize many of the corporations, and you probably have a relationship with some — either you are a customer, a shareholder, or maybe even an employee. Contact them and compliment or complain, but let them know you are watching. Forward it to others.

Law firm wants to quit tRump Sean O’Driscoll Newsweek
A law firm wants to withdraw from representing Donald Trump, citing a breakdown in relations, court documents show.
In a filing to a Manhattan court, the law firm—LaRocca, Hornik, Greenberg, Rosen, Kittridge, Carlin and McPartland—said there had been an "irreparable breakdown in the attorney-client relationship."
The firm, which has represented Trump and his election campaign for several years, had been defending the former president in a lawsuit filed by A.J. Delgado, Trump's former senior advisor who said she was fired after she became pregnant by her supervisor during the 2016 presidential campaign. She was Trump's director of Hispanic outreach at the time.
They are not tellng us why, desiring to tell the judge in camera (in chambers). No payment? Tired of lies? But to know tRump well is to dislike him intensely.
And Todd Blanche may already dislike tRump intensely, because he read the VonSchitzinpants nickname into the record.

📣 Let’s Honor Truth ☀️️
This week we’re honoring independent journalism that digs and finds the truth. First, let’s start with some of President Biden’s words from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner:
And so is what all of you do when you report truth over lies. That’s why I want to close tonight with my genuine thanks to the free press.
There are some who call you the “enemy of the people.” That’s wrong, and it’s dangerous. You literally risk your lives doing your job. You do. (Applause.)
Covering everything from natural disasters to pandemics to wars and so much more. And some of your colleagues have given their lives, and many have suffered grievous injuries. Other reporters have lost their freedom.
Journalism is clearly not a crime. Not here, not there, not anywhere in the world. (Applause.)
And Putin should release Evan and Alsu immediately. (Applause.)
So let’s honor a particular local journalist, Matt Campbell, who uncovered lectern gate, some questionable spending by Sarah Huckabee Sanders, currently the governor of Arkansas Andrew DeMillo Associated Press
The lectern’s purchase emerged last year just as Sanders was urging lawmakers to broadly limit the public’s access to records about her administration. Sanders ultimately signed a measure blocking release of her travel and security records after broader exemptions faced backlash from media groups and some conservatives.
The purchase was initially uncovered by Matt Campbell, a lawyer and blogger who has a long history of open records requests that have uncovered questionable spending and other misdeeds by elected officials.
The audit said Sanders’ office potentially illegally tampered with public records when the words “to be reimbursed” were added to the original invoice for the lectern only after the state GOP paid for it in September. Sanders’ office disputed that finding, calling handwritten notes on invoices “a common bookkeeping practice.”

Goodable: Shaq once had a $40 million endorsement deal with Reebok but cancelled it because they refused to sell his shoes at affordable prices. He gave the money back, went to Walmart, and partnered with them to make shoes that were affordable. He sold 120 million pairs.
Can you imagine tRump giving back 40 dollars, let alone 40 million? I wonder how his gold-sprayed shoes are doing.

Orangutan uses medicinal plant! Jack Guy, CNN through Yahoo News
Scientists working in Indonesia have observed an orangutan intentionally treating a wound on their face with a medicinal plant, the first time this behavior has been documented.
Rakus, a male Sumatran orangutan, treated a wound on his face by chewing leaves from a climbing plant named Akar Kuning and repeatedly applying the juice to it, according to a paper published in the journal Scientific Reports on Thursday.
Rakus then covered the wound with the chewed up leaves, which are used in traditional medicine to treat illnesses like dysentery, diabetes and malaria, said scientists.
Eat more curry! Andy Corbley Good News Network
In a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials, curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, was found to improve mobility and stiffness in those suffering from osteopenia and osteoarthritis.
Curcumin is simply one of the most incredible natural therapeutic compounds known in foods and has been investigated for its effects on everything from cancer to autoimmune disorders.
Apparently not all people absorb it well when they eat it, though. Maybe they do. I admit GNN sometimes falls for those trying to sell products. But curry is good!
Taxing fossil fuel companies could be a great tool for cutting emissions Cristen Hemingway Jaynes EcoWatch
According to the new Climate Damages Tax report, introducing a fossil fuel tax on companies in the richest countries in the world could generate hundreds of billions to aid the most vulnerable nations in coping with the climate crisis.
The impacts of climate change disproportionately affect poorer nations that have contributed to it the least.
“Climate change is a war. A category five hurricane releases energy equivalent to 10,000 times the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. Those countries on the path of hurricanes and cyclones and submerging coasts are on the front line,” wrote Avinash Persaud, special envoy on investment and finances to the prime minister of Barbados, in the preface to the report. “Climate change is not a freak of nature. It is human-made, as human-made as power and greed. If the consequences of climate change were felt disproportionately by those who have contributed to it, it would have stopped long ago.”
The report calculated that a new extraction tax on the biggest fossil fuel companies — those based in countries belonging to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) — could create $720 billion for vulnerable countries’ loss and damage fund by 2030, reported The Guardian.
