If you are familiar with the keto diet then you know what a chaffle is. For those of you who don’t know, a chaffle is a cheese waffle – a high protein low carb concoction that can be made savory or sweet. The most basic chaffle recipe only has two ingredients – egg and cheese. The biggest complaint from most people trying them is that they taste “eggy” but I really think that it is a result of the exact recipe being used and not all of them are “eggy.”
The concept of making waffles with cheese is not new. The ancient Greeks used to make a type of waffle called "obelios" that was made with cheese and honey. The first known recipe for chaffles was published in a keto diet cookbook in 2019. Chaffles quickly became popular among people following the keto diet. Chaffles are a keto-friendly food because they are made with low-carb ingredients like cheese and eggs. They are also a good source of protein, which can help you feel full and satisfied.
Chaffles can be made in a regular waffle maker but most people prefer to use a mini waffle maker that makes a chaffle the size of an Eggo frozen waffle. The typical chaffle recipe makes two chaffles of this size – perfect to use instead of bread for a sandwich. Savory ones are most often used as a snack or to make a sandwich. Sweet ones can be used in making desserts.
There are literally thousands of chaffle recipes on YouTube and keto recipe sites. Here are a few that I felt were promising. The first three are from the Keto Twins. I like their videos because they don’t seem over polished — just two average people trying recipes they found on the internet.
This is not the diary I was struggling to complete for last week. That one is still not coming together the way I want. Maybe next week.
