Howard Dean Shouldn't Go Quietly
February 17, 2004
Howard Dean e-mailed 660,000 supporters begging them to raise $700,000 by Sunday to fund a Wisconsin last stand. A Rasmussen poll soon found that, for the first time since winning Iowa, John F. Kerry's national numbers have slipped among Democrats - dropping from 51% to 43% in 72 hours. John "the Breck Girl" Edwards increased his second place support from 18% to 25% in the same period.
As of last night, the Deaniacs had raised almost twice what they set out to get in $50 contributions. We can only guess at what's driving Kerry's plunge and whether it's related to the ad blitz. With both Wisconsin and the nomination race are over, the Reverend Jackson suggested that Dean get out of the race after he loses today, but that party leaders shouldn't humiliate him. They should instead negotiate his exit to keep his supporters in the party.
If I were Howard, I would ignore Jackson. I wouldn't go quietly at all; I'd raise hell! I would not pledge the Deaniacs to whoever this nominee is if it's not Howard Dean. Dean is the guy that made Kerry who he is! He's the only legitimate liberal in this race, the only guy that didn't lie about what he and liberals believe. For this, Dean has been savaged, mistreated and destroyed by his own party much like they would go after a Republican.
How can he now be expected to turn over his supporters to a certified phony who's on every side of every issue? I was glad to see Dean dump Steve Grossman, who said he'd support Kerry if Dean lost Wisconsin. If only Dean would go after Kerry in full force! Instead, he's still out there running against me, a non-candidate! Maybe that's the real reason he's not dropping out: he likes that line about "taking the flag back" from your lovable fuzzball too much.
