Yesterday's "line in the sand" performance by Bush, in which he effectively dared the Congress and the people of the United States to stop his illegal domestic espionage, can be interpreted very differently from the foolish defiance that appears on the surface.
Consider that evasions, lies, and weaseling are the modus operandi of the Rove/Cheney/Bush administration. Why would they now squarely accept responsibility for patently illegal activity and vow to continue it? What if Bush has been told by the permanent government that it is time for him to go? A forced resignation because of pending criminal charges would make him a martyr to his zealots and clear the way for the installation of a more competent minder of the plutocracy's interests.
