For years now, anytime a group of reformers wants to support a 3rd party or independent candidate ... the first thing you hear from the Democrats is that this can't happen because the Supreme Court is so important
Now, suddenly it seems that the Supreme Court isn't really all that important to the Democrats.
President Bush has nominated an extreme right wing judge to become a Justice on the Supreme Court. This judge has made it plain that in the past he opposes the decision in Roe v Wade. And he clearly refused to call Roe v Wade "settled law" in his confirmation testimony.
Also, this justice support the bizarre legal theory that the President and the Executive branch have some sort of supreme power over the other branches of government. This directly contradicts the very basic notions of separation of powers and checks and balances between the branches of government.
Between these two, this adds up to an extraordinarily dangerous nomination to the highest court in the land.
Yet, suddenly, the Democrats act like the Supreme Court isn't all that important.
On the abortion rights issues, this is extraordinary. The main groups attacking 3rd party campaigns have been the abortion rights groups. They've stood strongly by the Democratic Party, and gladly served the party by heaping scorn and abuse upon any independent campaign. The case they made was that abortion rights were hanging by a one vote thread in the Supreme Court, and that this was of vital importance.
Yet, when push comes to shove. When President Bush puts forward the nominee his fundamentalist Christian supporters have dreamed of, a nominee who seems almost certain to vote against abortion rights and form the majority needed to overturn Roe V Wade, the Democratic Party seems willing to abandon the very groups that have been their strongest supporters.
If the Democrats are willing to turn on their friends like this. And to do so on an issue where polls indicate that they have a strong majority of Americans supporting them. To do so on an issue that's been a strong winning issue in many Democratic campaigns, then is it any wonder the Democrats have so few friends left?
I know this. If Judge Alito is on the Supreme Court, the next time I'm supporting a 3rd Party or Independent campaign, I don't ever want to hear a word about the Supreme Court again.
The Democrats have the power and the opportunity to stop the nomination of Judge Alito. If they don't do so, then its clear that they are satisfied with him on the court.
SO DON'T EVER BRING UP THE SUPREME COURT AGAIN AS LONG AS JUSTICE ALITO IS SITTING ON THE SUPREME COURT!!!!!!!!!!!!
