This was buried on
page 5 of my LA Times yesterday. Given the amount of press that the original announcement got, this caught me quite off guard.
Bush even mentionned it in that "wonderful (b.s.)" speech he gave a few monday's ago. And it turns out, it was just a lie.
Interim Iraqi President Ghazi Ajil Yawer said there were no plans to destroy the Abu Ghraib prison, despite an offer by President Bush to replace the jail, where U.S. troops abused inmates.
"No. Why? It's a prison that we spent more than $100 million building," Yawer said on ABC's "This Week." "We need every single dollar we have in order to rebuild our country instead of demolishing and rebuilding."
So yeah, let's see, when the media were all focusing on Abu Ghraib and Bush had to give a speech to try to save his reelection campaign...we're going to demolish the prison. A few weeks later, the media moves off to cover some funeral, and they totally reverse course.
Hell, you might even almost accuse this of being a "Flip-flop."
The damn thing should have been knocked down with great fanfare when we first went into the country. Now it looks to be too late. Whoever ends up being the pro-American dictator of Iraq will probably enjoy the facility.
