From THE GREAT STATE OF MAINE...
Hey America...are you ready for some DAYLIGHT?? Lemme hear you: "Yaaaaaahhhh!" Don't forget, per the U.S. Constitution, you must stay up until 2am Sunday morning to move your clocks ahead one hour. Ashcroft's electronic beetles of death will be roaming your neighborhood.
Poll results from yesterday: No surprise that video games were the #1 favorite childhood posessions. But #2---TonkaTM trucks---surprised me. It's good to know there were lots of other people strip-mining mom's flowerbeds with those yellow dozers, cranes and backhoes. Hehhehheh.
Lots to cheer and jeer about today, so let's get to it. Have a great weekend. Your daily dose of brain food starts in the Extended Copy section...RIGHTNOW!
Cheers and Jeers for Friday, April 2, 2004
CHEERS to jobs report. Non-farm payrolls up by 308,000 (though unemployment rate ticks up a notch to 5.7%). Good job, Dubya---just another 2-point-something million and you'll break even.
CHEERS to Air America Network. It's finally sinking in---I don't have to listen to AM radio with my BS meter at full power (it took me ten minutes to find the off switch in my head). Franken letting guest Bob Hayes of Medicare Rights Center read the `live' ad for sexual dysfunction supplement? Classic.
CHEERS to 3-6pm host Randi Rhodes. Wow. "Journalists are so freakin' lazy---no wonder the president gets away with ev-er-y-thing!" And Wednesday's Nader smackdown? Whew...Hell hath no fury like a liberal Brooklynite scorned.
CHEERS to April 8. Condi's Come-to-Jesus moment. But new testimony from FBI whistleblower saying Condi knew of Al Qaeda's plans long before 9/11 could sink her: (http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/story.jsp?story=507514). Will clingy Christian Dior gown be enough to distract the panel?
JEERS to Bill Frist. John Nichols' essay in `The Nation' confirms what I've always thought: the guy's a forgettable stooge with little more than $$$ on the brain. But that hair...so real! http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0401-01.htm
CHEERS to Kos teammate Mike C. for passing along the Letterman vs. CNN clips. (email me and I'll forward them to you). The most disgusting part of this hullabaloo: the smug, smarmy, smirky reactions of those two CNN prompter-reading stewardesses.
CHEERS to South Park. Parker and Stone skewer `The Passion'---and Mel Gibson---with a vengeance. The flying fecal fart finale belongs in the Hall of Fame. The best episode since Lemmiwinks? http://homepage.mac.com/sthompson/iMovieTheater13.html Tough call.
JEERS to right-wing plagiarism. SCOOP! In Novak's latest column (http://www.creators.com/opinion_show.cfm?columnsName=rno), he writes that Richard Clarke's book "was timed to coincide with his testimony." In George Will's latest column (http://www.sacbee.com/content/opinion/national/will/story/8683070p-9610844c.html), he writes that Richard Clarke's book "was timed to coincide with his testimony." Hmm...are talking points coming from the House of White?
JEERS to foregone conclusions. Georgia voters will be asked this fall if they favor amending the state constitution to outlaw same-sex marriages (http://www.advocate.com/new_news.asp?ID=11900&sd=04/02/04). Even the oddsmakers in Vegas aren't touching this one. Hint: it starts with a Y and ends in an S.
CHEERS to books with wings. 'Against All Enemies' is flying off shelves at 130,000 copies per week. And knowing Americans' lazy reading habits, up to half may make it past the first chapter.
CHEERS to `Hellboy.' Ron Perlman... John Hurt...together at last! Okay, that's a stretch...but we're overdue for a Nazis-open-a-portal-to-the-dark-universe-unleashing-the-gods-of-chaos flick (chicks dig `em). And look at the rave reviews: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/Hellboy-1131153/
CHEERS to Daylight Savings Time. All the clocks spring forward an hour this weekend. Except you unpatriotic holdouts in Indiana and Arizona---what's WITH you people!?
CHEERS to Charles Hall. He patented aluminum 115 years ago today. And made the world safe for the paranoid. Be prepared: http://www.hallucinaut.com/foilhats/
So...what are you cheering and jeering about today? (Don't be shy. I disabled the "autoshock reply" feature.)
