Now, there have been talk of trying to impeach Bush, even while the republican congress was still in power. Other than the fact that it'd be more likely that Bush suddenly changes his affiliation to the Green Party and bans pollution, lets look at some other reasons why it may not be the best of ideas.
One possible reason: the friggen order of succession to the presidency.
more below.
Lets have a look at it:
- Vice President Richard Cheney
- Speaker of the House John Dennis Hastert
- President pro tempore of the Senate Ted Stevens
- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
- Secretary of the Treasury John Snow
- Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld
- Attorney General Alberto Gonzales
- Secretary of the Interior Gale A. Norton
- Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns
Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez
Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao
- Secretary of Health and Human Services Mike Leavitt
- Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Alphonso Jackson
- Secretary of Transportation Norman Yoshio Mineta
- Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman
- Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings
- Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson
- Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff
Carlos Gutierrez and Elaine Chao are both foreign born and are inelgible.
Barring changes in Bush's cabinet, there are only two places in this line that can change, and neither of those will before the 2006 election: Speaker of the House and President pro tempore of the Senate.
if we were to win back the house, probably still a longshot chance at the moment, presumably Nancy Pelosi would become speaker and fall in at #3 on the list.
If the more likely scenerio happens: Republicans still hold the House but we gain the Senate, Hastert is still at #3 and, pending his re-election, Senator Byrd will fall in place at #4 on the list.
If we don't gain back either house, nothing changes.
Of course, that would beg the question, if we were faced with this lineup, how far would impeachment people try to go? There would basically be no chance that a democrat could become president through impeachment, and once you get to Hastert and Stevens, any case for impeachment would be even harder to make than it is now.
Just something to think about
