This is a follow up to yesterday's diary, in which I
listed the most improved environmentalists, where most improved meant a LCV score that was both over 50 and at least
Today I'm listing Environmental Heroes. I'm defining an environmental hero as anybody who with a LCV score of 89% or higher = voted pro-environment on at least 18 of 20 House votes, or 17 of 19 Senate votes, according to the League of Conservation Voters Details on the scorecard, as well as the complete scorecard if you're curious about your own congresspeople, can be seen here.
I've corrected for a silly flaw in the way LCV ratings are generated: LCV counts a missed vote as equal to an anti-environmental vote. Thus, some scores are artificially low; in particular, the scores of everyone who ran for president (Edwards, Gephardt, Graham, Kucinich, Kerry) tanked. I've put a # next to those who are below 89% due to missed votes, but voted pro-environment at least 89% of the time that they did vote. Also, anyone who has a perfect 100 is
bolded.
If you see your own senator or represenative here, I encourage you to contact them and thank them for championing of the environment, as reflected by their high LCV rating. Knowing that their constituents are watching will encourage them to keep up the good work (and maybe hit the glorious 100 if they haven't already).
Out of 535 congresspeople, 155 are environmental heroes. Of these, 151 are Democrats; 2 are Independents who caucus with Democrats: Jeffords (VT) and Sanders (VT); and 2 are Republicans: Leach (IA), and Shays (CT).
The list goes state-by-state. States are in alphabetical order (by name, not abbreviation, so IL is before IA); states with no environmental champions are not listed. Within each state the representatives are in alphabetical order, except that senators are listed first and get the prefix "Sen."
