Blue America Adopts the Kyoto Protocol

We're moving ahead with climate change policy whether the Bush Administration likes it or not.

 The U.S. Conference of Mayors has unanimously endorsed Seattle Mayor Nickels' Climate Protection Agreement.  (see details at the Seattle Mayor's page.)

Seattle's Mayor Greg Nickels had this to say:

"Mayors across America are making it clear; we're not going to wait for the federal government to do something to prevent the production of greenhouse gases. We're going to step up and provide the leadership at the local level, city by city."

What are your city's plans?  (More below the fold)

In my home town of New York City, the City Council just brought "Intro.661" to the floor which is a bill to curb CO2 and other green house gas (GHG) emissions from city operations by 20% from a 1995 baseline by 2009.  Further reductions of 25% and 30% are mandated by 2015 and 2020 respectively.

In addition, the bill creates a network of private sector climate partners and a framework for regular reporting to the public on emissions and plans to meet reduction targets.  If your home town doesn't have a plan yet, I highly recommend you "cannibalize" this one.  We at New York Climate Rescue have been working with the Council for over a year on this and it's pretty well thought out.

It would be great however to have resource of policy options that are being considered or have been adopted around the country/world to help plan our own local climate mitigation strategies.
