Well, I never expected former Sen. Max Cleland (D-Ga.), who was smeared into extinction by a dirty 2002 campaign, to come out of the dark, especially when he said numerous times post-2002 that he was done with political office. Yet the beleaguered Georgia Democrats are asking if he will
run for Lieutenant Governor next year.
I don't know if this is good or bad. While I like Cleland, his presence would dredge up ugly memories of 2002 and perhaps cause the election to be a referendum on Cleland instead of a referendum on Gov. Sonny Perdue (R). Plus, Democrats already have one very electable candidate, Secretary of State Cathy Cox, running for Governor. While many Kossacks take issue with her stance on e-voting, she is progressive as popular southern politicians go, and more importantly she's tied with the incumbent Perdue in every poll. Her popularity on the ground in Georgia exceeds Cleland's, so I wonder if he might drag down the Dem ticket. However, this article points a much rosier picture than that, so I defer to you Peach Staters.
