With all of the information available now regarding the White House involvement in the firings and the suspicions that Carol Lam may have been fired over the continuing Cunningham investigations, it is time to seriously start talking about impeachment of Bush. I know a lot of people have been saying this for some time now, and some have been arguing that it isn't "politically viable" or whatever. The intersection of White House involvement in the firings and the possibility of at least one of the firings relating to a US Attorney's pursuit of an investigation has drastically changed the calculus.
Richard Nixon resigned before articles of impeachment could be brought before the full House for a vote. But three articles had been approved by the Judiciary Committee, meaning a full vote was imminent. Nixon resigned when he was informed that not only would they pass the House, but the Senate was likely to convict on at least one of the articles. He was left with no choice: resign or be removed.
Article 1, part 4 states:
interfering or endeavouring to interfere with the conduct of investigations by the Department of Justice of the United States, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the office of Watergate Special Prosecution Force, and Congressional Committees;
Article 2, part 5 states:
In disregard of the rule of law, he knowingly misused the executive power by interfering with agencies of the executive branch, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Criminal Division, and the Office of Watergate Special Prosecution Force, of the Department of Justice, and the Central Intelligence Agency, in violation of his duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed.
There is a particular passage in the document dump (see the second bullet point at the top of page 22 here):
The real problem we have right now with Carol Lam that leads me to conclude that we should have someone ready to be nominated on 11/18, the day her 4-year term expires.
This e-mail was dated May 11, 2006. On May 12, 2006, the FBI raided Kyle "Dusty" Foggo's home. Kind of makes you wonder about the "real problem" they had "right now" with Carol Lam.
I think our congresscritters need to focus in on what the problem was, who thought it was a problem, and what they intended to do about. It seems quite plausible to me that, if the dots can be connected, we have the White House (read: George Bush) interfering with an investigation by tampering with the DOJ investigation. Sound familiar?
