Snagged this from my local Dean message board:
HOWARD DEAN, DELEGATE SLATES SUBMIT MORE THAN Snaggeed this fromENOUGH PETITION SIGNATURES IN ALL CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICTS; DEAN COULD MAKE NY PRIMARY BALLOT NINE TIMES OVER
NEW YORK - In an incredible show of grassroots support across the state, the campaign of Governor Howard Dean is submitting 107,746 petition signatures around the state - more than enough to qualify a Democratic candidate for
President and full slates of delegates to the Democratic convention committed to him in every single Congressional District in New York State.
---
This apparently means that Charlie Rangel will be a Dean delegate!--
While other candidates may have paid individuals and groups to collect petition signatures, the Dean campaign is proud that it relied on exclusively its supporters to gather signatures from their neighbors.
"The outpouring of support for Governor Dean throughout this process has been awe-inspiring," said New York State campaign director Ethan Geto. "The process one has to go through to get on the ballot in New York is a Byzantine gauntlet, so to collect this many petition signatures solely through volunteer support is a tremendous feat. Our people-powered campaign is proving to be one of the most powerful forces in New York State political history."
In the March 2nd primary in New York, voters will be both voting for both a candidate and delegates pledged to that candidate to go to the Democratic Convention in Boston in 2004. Therefore, each campaign had to circulate petitions to get their candidate on the ballot and separate petitions
for their slates of delegates in each Congressional District, if they chose to run delegates.
