Heard this despicable item on NPR this morning. There's no transcript and the only reference I can find is the NPR story, so bear with my memory lapses. Hear's a
link to the NPR audio so you can listen to it yourself.
During recent debate of the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act in the House, Democrats offered multiple amendments. Now House Dems are accusing the majority of mischaracterizing the nature of those amendments by recording them in the Congressional Record with inflammatory, misleading language.
One amendment offered by Democrats would provide an exemption to penalties under the act for grandparents and other relatives who transported a related minor across state lines to access abortion services.
The amendment failed, but was recorded in the Congressional Record as
"Mr Nadler [D-NY] offers an Amendment to provide Sexual Predators an exemption from the provisions of the bill if they are adult siblings or grandparents". The proposed amendment never made it out of the Judiciary Committee, but now is recorded for the rest of history as a Democractic sponsored amendment to shield sexual predators.
House Republicans have refused to change the language in the committee records. Sensenbrenner (R-WI) stated that Republican written reports were accurate because the effect of the amendment would have been to exempt sexual predators, even though the intent was clearly not to do so. Sensenbrenner offered advice to the Democrats: "In the future, be more careful with the language you choose."
Listen to the NPR report. The excerpts of floor discussions in the House are amazing.
