Because the game is not over and you have to fight for every spot: More voters for the top guy means more opportunity for each down ballot race. Sometimes pragmatism has to prevail over purity.
There have been quite a few diaries about Barack Obama's gamesmanship so I don't think he is taking another trip to Virginia to support the Democratic candidate for Governor: Creigh Deeds, without thinking about the long term impact of the race. The event is scheduled for next Tuesday, October 27th at Old Dominion University in Norfolk. Time-to be announced.
Creigh Deeds is not a perfect candidate-not a smooth talkin’ robot spewing the party line. He is a smart, honest guy who is running to keep Virginia moving forward towards a better future, not back to 1950’s Leave it to Beaver time.
The two big issues this year in Virginia : transportation and the economy:
On the economy: Bob McDonnell is for more “trickle down” and Creigh Deeds is pushing opportunity for all.
For transportation, Deeds has come out and said almost nothing is off the table and would consider a gas tax to meet the needs to improve Virginia’s roads. He will not take education funds and use them for roads. Bob McDonnell says he has a plan that includes drilling off shore and the profits for this will pay for roads (note-no infrastructure is in place for drilling and Congress would have to allow it). Taking from education funds-ok or not depending on which day you ask.
For more on Bob McDonnell's flip flips: Here is a great diary, h/t to Blue Commonwealth:
"Bob McDonnell's many election year conversions"
Last month I was phone-banking and when I called and asked for the name of the guy on the list, the gentleman who answered said he wasn’t home, but he was the guy's brother. I asked when I could call back but he could not give me a time as his brother is working two jobs. I talked with him a few minutes about the election and he told me everyone in his family are supporting Deeds.
The less-taxes for the rich, unions-suck positions held by Bob McDonnell provide little for such a family.
So maybe not the perfect candidate but a better choice than the alternative.
I find it interesting that when appeals to fight a Joe Wilson or Michelle Bachman occur-we jump to help. Well, this guy Bob is no different on the "crazy" scale: here is his visit today at Liberty University:
Maybe the best reason Barack Obama will take precious time out of his schedule is Virginia’s kids-who knows, maybe Malia’s or Sasha’s running mate will come from Virginia.
