5:21 PM PT: Dems might be able to hold pivotal SD-38 in the Virginia state Senate: We
re leading 53-47 with half reporting in coal country.
5:27 PM PT: Ohio Issue 2 is getting just absolutely crushed in the early going, 67-33. While only 1% of precincts are reporting, that number likely includes all the early vote, so a substantial number of votes are already in.
5:27 PM PT: Virginia state Senate hangs in the balance: Dems are losing the 20th by 2, but holding 38th by 2 and 17th by 1. (Can't afford to lose 2 of those.)
5:31 PM PT: A trickle of votes has been tallied in Maine, where the good guys ("Yes") lead on Question 1, restoration of same-day voter registration, 56-44. Not even a thousand votes yet, though.
5:37 PM PT: Results are also beginning to appear in New Jersey, where the entire legislature is up, but no one is predicting anything exciting. Dems hold both chambers, and the GOP is trying to spin "no change" as a victory.
5:42 PM PT: With just under 70% of precincts reporting, Democrat John Edwards, thought to be very vulnerable in SD-21, has a solid lead over Dave Nutter. The margin stands right now at 14 points (57-43).
5:46 PM PT: Virginia: In SD-17, Houck (D) may get bailed out by Albemarle County (near Charlottesville); Reynolds (D) looks like he's toast in SD-20 - none of his good stuff is left.
5:48 PM PT: It's getting very dicey in Virginia. Republicans have already won 17 contests. If the win three more, they take control of the state Senate.
5:49 PM PT: Democrat Rich Fitzgerald has a big early lead in the Allegheny County (PA) chief executive's race. That's the home of Pittsburgh.
5:51 PM PT: While GOP control of the VA state House was never in doubt, what does matter is that they are gaining seats there, perhaps half a dozen. A bad omen for the Senate.
6:13 PM PT (Kaili Joy Gray): The liveblog continues in thread #5.
