While thirty veterans were telling their stories and standing in support of Occupy Oakland this afternoon in the amphitheatre in Ogawa Plaza / Oscar Grant Park, and as a slight drizzle turned to a light rain, the City of Oakland decided that it would be a good time to serve notice.
Or, as Reporter Susie Cagle tweeted
susie_c Susie Cagle
#occupyoakland eviction notice passed around camp today. Described to me as the "get the fuck out" notice.
It basically says the occupiers are in violation of all sorts of laws, including obstructing free use of property, interfering with comfortable enjoyment, making fires using barbecue devices and stoves, and not looking like upstanding citizens who dress in business suits (yeah, I made that last one up). And by the way if you don't go away you'll be subject to administrative penalties, civil penalties, and arrest.
Pretty much of a similar notice was served the last time before the police moved in.
What it might mean after the squiggle.
So is this the end? Cagle again tweets
susie_c Susie Cagle
#occupyoakland eviction notice appears to be from Santana, says nothing about a time limit or warning period.
and OccupyOakland tweets
occupyoakland Occupy Oakland
Notice of violations and demand to cease violations given at #OO tonight Not an eviction notice, cops say. #OWS
But it's pretty clear that it's coming. Only the continuous massing of a thousand or two thousand people in the camp is going to stop them, and that doesn't seem likely; certainly not in the miserable weather overnight. But if the camp survives until tomorrow the forecast for Saturday, Sunday and Monday is sunny, if not warm.. As I understand it from other tweets, at least a few of the veterans have pledged to stand with Occupy Oakland tonight.
The General Assembly was scheduled to meet starting at 6:00 PM. They may not keep a quorum (50 people) for long if the rain keeps up.
Stay tuned.
I leave you with this tweet by allie123, who, as I did, marched with the veterans up Broadway after the speakout. I broke off at 19th St. to BART home, but she stayed with the march as it stopped in front of a police station and chanted, then headed back to the Square.

6:33 PM PT: If you are local, help spread the word of the eviction notice via every way you can.
6:51 PM PT: Looks like the rain has stopped in Oakland. Still drizzling here in Berkeley.

9:12 PM PT:
Shots were fired from at least one car about a block away from the White House Friday night, and a loaded AK-47 assault rifle was recovered from the scene, the Secret Service said. The episode does not appear to be connected to the White House.
When queried Mayor Quan stated that the White House be evacuated because of the seemy element it was attracting to downtown DC.
9:27 PM PT: Technically, 10:00 PM is when it starts to be illegal to be in Ogawa Plaza until 6:00 AM. So if the police were going to move in, it makes sense to do it after 10:00 PM to avoid issues of people who aren't sleeping there being picked up in the sweep.

9:45 p.m. Sockupy Oakland
A man named Michael Haley is handing out free socks at the Occupy encampment, saying he is running Sockupy Oakland. Dry feet, he says, are the key to getting people to defy Quan's request to leave.
He has a website, www.sockupyoakland.org, where he is accepting donations to buy more socks.
He started the effort in honor of his mother, who was an activist in the '60s who wanted to join the Occupy Oakland movement, he wrote on the site. " ... but I wouldn't let her go face the riot cops," he wrote. "I'll do that for her for now, thanks. So, when she asked, 'Well what CAN I do?' I said socks. Socks were the number one request of campers who a friend and I talked to on our various tours of OGP. Even Forrest Gump knows to take care of your feet."
