Hasn't Herman Cain already hurt enough women? (Jim Young/Reuters)
A
new low for Herman Cain:
While Herman Cain weighs whether to stay in the race after being accused of carrying on a decade-plus affair, the campaign is looking to repair the damage his various alleged improprieties have caused with women supporters. His website just went live with a new “Women For Cain” section where female supporters can share their stories —and slam his accusers as “vindictive,” “jealous,” “unstable,” and “husbandless.”
The initiative, the site says, is chaired by his wife, Gloria Cain, who has been virtually 100% absent from the campaign trail so far and only recently gave her first interview — and that was after canceling previous ones first.
First of all, this sort of vicious attack is exactly the sort of thing you'd expect from someone capable of the things Herman Cain has been accused of.
And don't forget, they are more than just accusations. Set aside the question of whether he had an affair—we know for a fact that two of women that Herman Cain is now disparaging were given a full year's salary to settle their charges of sexual harassment. That's undisputed. Clearly, Cain did something to those women, or there would not have been the settlements.
As for whether or not he had a consensual affair with Ginger White, there's plenty of other reasons to oppose Herman Cain. But given that there's plenty of reason to believe White's story and that Cain is refusing to offer any evidence that it is untrue, these kinds of attacks are disgusting.
Finally, I wonder whether Gloria Cain really does support the effort on Cain's website. Earlier today, The Daily Beast not only reported that she wants him out of the campaign, but that she knows he's had issues with women. If he does quit—and I suspect he will—it'll be a clear sign that his own site dishonestly used his wife's name to attack innocent women. And I hope they sue him for every dime they can get.
8:51 AM PT: In another section of his site, Cain posts an article comparing Ginger White to the woman who falsely accused the Duke Lacrosse team of rape:
Another thing that hasn't been mentioned. How old are White's children? She had a 13 year affair but was she busy having babies at the same time? Also this woman has a background more checkered than the woman who accused the Duke lacrosse team of rape. Remember how everyone jumped to the conclusion that her word was gospel, after all event the district attorney said the players were guilty. Today the accuser, who was proven to be certifiable, is in jail for stabbing her boyfriend to death as he slept. This is after she was in and out of jail for other offenses before the murder. Her background was paved with illegitimate children, battery, lies, prostitution, ad nauseum.
This truly is one of the most appalling things I have ever seen a campaign do. It's one thing to launch nasty attacks on your political opponents, but to do it on people who aren't involved in the political process? For all the screaming about moral depravity from Herman Cain and his allies, it's time for them to look in the mirror.
